Re: New GPX 5000 and 4800 views
just a thought stoppsy
next time he get's a target that you can't, try putting a standard (dd) like his on your 4000 and take your 4000
out of smooth and put it in normal...and see what happens
would be interested to know if you still don't get it
cheers

i'll give that a go...i have a 14inch dd but with the arm that i smashed up a few years ago it can only swing it for a little time....i'm going to have to look at getting some bit light weight coils...that's one reason i use a 8" coil

well i was thinking off modding my 4000 until you said that jp. i would thought once the warranty ran out that was it. that why i was thinking off doing it. well it will be left standard i think.paragold wrote: they have a long history of fixing things for free well after the warranty has run out even when there is a change of ownership

Re: New GPX 5000 and 4800 views
The science behind modding a detector is very plausable, what is a 4500 over a 4000 its been upgraded or modded if you will, but by minelab its self and has been tested before release and has a warranty, if its true that the modders have been modding every minelab since the sd 2000 they couldnt be that bad because they are still in business and people keep getting them done, having said that i wouldnt do it to a 4000 or 4500 but if i had an older model i would look at it for sure, it all depends on who's doing it and how good they are,

Here,Here Gollstar. If i can be guaranteed for certain that i can get at least 15% better performance overall after the mods, i"d have the 10 000 modded not alone the 4500.

Re: New GPX 5000 and 4800 views
Kon i dont know about a 15% increase but im certain that the minelab platforms could be improved upon, which isnt saying anything bad about minelab what so ever, when you think about all the modders are doing is taking a great platform and trying to improve upon it which ever way you want to look at it, its possible, its being done right now, as for the modders and their individual work i could not comment on, but whether you can improve an already great product sure of course you can, thats why their is a new model every couple of years, its just a matter of how far behind the modders are, and how really good they are, which id say the modders themselves no a mother hump more than me about the inards of a detector than me.

Gollstar, I think you've misunderstood me.I'm not going against you m8,in fact i totally agree with
you. Every product that's ever come off a production line has left room for further improve-
ments. Id have to be plain stupid or naive to think elsewise.

No worries my fault im not the best public presenter and i will come off the wrong way, ive read over 500 books but cant talk to people face to face or be able to present what i mean in an acceptable way or an understanding way thats my fault, ive only had the internet for 3 maybe 4 years max so im still having mega problems interacting with people over the big net.

Re: New GPX 5000 and 4800 views
Hi all, the review in the link is quite interesting, ignoring the reply by doug. Ive had a similar experience with my new machine as ive posted in "first impressions". The reviewer does not have the anti Minelab attitude that dougs forum is famous for but gives his personal opinion of what he experienced, more credit to him as he did have a 4500 to compare to. It is good to read reactions from owners of the new machine as they get out into the goldfields and use the detector in varying conditions. As more individual reviews are posted it will help others make a more informed decision on upgrading. As always one must wade thru the BS but somewhere in there will be some truth. Polak.

Re: New GPX 5000 and 4800 views
i think it's a bit early to be putting down the new 5000. not many people would have worked out all the settings and all that as yet. the only reason the 45 would be better is coz he's use to it and know the ins and outs off it and what to listen for....

Hi all, With all the rain about, there would not have been time to fully "immerse" oneself in the full work load of the new 5000. We need a few WA people to let us know how they have gone. As the whole east coast is under water, even Birdsville.

The problem seems forum members are keen for feedback on the new detectors BUT are only willing to accept positive reviews with out question, give an honest report but with a less positive slant and you are in for it. Not all positives are immune i know jp cops his fair share. Unless you have one and have used it and know what you you are taking about you will be doing no one a favour by discouraging others from posting about their experiences if u dont show the same respect to both positive and negative reports. I'm all for positive or negative comments so long as they are constructive and don't get personal. I've had a positive experience with the 5000's I have used, the negatives are only the normal variety that go with all detecting, EMI at times, ground noise occasionally, not enough gold, no gold on some areas I had great expectations because I assume it is all gone, hot and bothered etc, this is the daily grind of any detector operator and should not be confused with the reality. The GPX-5000 does not make gold, but if used correctly where what it has to offer is fully taken advantage of, where its strong points are clearly understood then the operator in control will reap the rewards.

OK got it now. The GPX-5000 turns ground noises into gold sometimes which I cash in and then buy wine, does that count?

Fair points JP, now back to serious stuff...could you post a picture of this suitable ground so I can print it out,
stick it to the top of my coil and try to match something out in the goldfields to that sample

killed a pig on this spot, quietish ground but massive amounts of BIF (banded iron formation) scattered through it which masked hundreds of little nuggets to the original finder.

Good to see that your kids are interested in detecting JP, my kids thought it was boring, my kids would enjoy it more if Minelab would have a X-box incorporated in their detectors

It is hard to get the kids enthusiastic, I'm taking them out this weekend "camping" so they will have no excape.
I used to have an X-box Johnny but I haven't seen her since she left luckily.

Re: New GPX 5000 and 4800 views
The last two times my young bloke came out the deal was he got to dig and got half the nugget or bullet or whatever. The first outing he dug a .2 and a .3 which he was stoked with. But hard to split those so he got to keep all of them, generous ain't I. The second outing he dug a 11.4g and he was even more stoked. Half of that bought him some nice gear. He is keen to come out again surprise surprise !
