Re: Heading To WA
Thx for the kind words Mike, and the opportunity to come camp with you, and share gold with like minded folk such as yourself Jenny and Mike JR.....and for the company on the long haul back east.
When folk go out of there way to put you on their hard earned patches, it causes you concern at not being able to do the same, in this case a little research payed off. With 12oz+ being found to top off the WA assault for 2013.
Well done Mike JR for finding it, and sharing it with us....you are truly a force thats has no equal, and to match you will take some doing.
The biggest bit i got this season was a 20gramer, but i got more than one.... Rainbow woops me with a 25grammer from a patch we shared with other forum members, which was also a payback for them putting us on one of their spots. "What go's around comes around".
Have yet to do a final tally, but its been a better season than last given our stay was shorter.
Will get some pics up as soon as we settle in having only been back for one night. Thx again guys for having us in your camp, and your hospitality is legendary.

Re: Heading To WA
G'day Peter and Andrew, thanks for the replies... Here is a explanation on Tektites Andrew and we speck them on the ground. They don't give a signal on the detector...
"This I took from google"
Tektites are small, pebble-like glassy objects of Earth material that have been melted by meteorite impact, splashed up into our atmosphere, and fallen to Earth again under gravity. They often acquire aerodynamic shapes when they partially melt on their return journey. Their name comes from the Greek word 'tektos', meaning 'molten'.
Cheers.

Re: Heading To WA
Thanks for the pics Mike & for that explanation of tektities. I too was wondering if they were detected or specked & if they were meteorite fragments. They look a lot like obsidian (volcanic glass) & by the explanation of tektities, obsidian can be formed in the same way.
Obsidian is an igneous rock that forms when molten rock material cools so rapidly that atoms are unable to arrange themselves into a crystalline structure. The result is a volcanic glass with a smooth uniform texture that breaks with a conchoidal fracture.
Obsidian is usually an extrusive rock - one that solidifies above Earth's surface. However, it can form in a variety of cooling environments:
•along the edges of a lava flow (extrusive)
•around the edges of a sill or a dike (intrusive)
•where lava contacts water (extrusive)
•where lava cools while airborne (extrusive) Like the tektities.
Black is the most common color of obsidian. However, it can also be brown or green. Rarely, obsidian can be blue, red, orange or yellow. The colors are thought to be caused mainly by trace elements or inclusions.
Occasionally two colors of obsidian will be swirled together in a single specimen. The most common color combination is black and brown obsidian swirled together - that's called "mahogany obsidian"
Here in NZ we have a lot of obsidian due to the many volcanic areas. A common obsidian we have in the Rotorua/Taupo area is "snow flake obsidian" Jet black with many little white specks of pumice mixed through out.
Thanks Mike
Good luck out there
