Re: Wiluna area
Hi mate. my bro inlaw works on the mine out there and he said its a very rich mine. so im guessing the ground would be like other areas in the wa goldfields so pritty hot. when i get out again im going to be heading from kal all the way up through that area up towards broom so i reckon it would be a good area. Only way to see if its good or not is to get out there i spose. I think if you have a look in gg it will show a few areas in that area aswell.
best of luck

Re: Wiluna area
Hi Evan2010,
I worked for 7 years on a mine just out of Wiluna. Most of those 7 years was spent underground but I did spend a year or so in exploration. Yes, the ground up around that way is pretty good, lots of quartz, the good quartz you want to look for.Alot of the areas are blanketed with EL's, but nothing that a 21A wont sort. But, saying that, we used to get quite o few prospectors through, and as long they had the big bosses consent then they were free to prospect. Just had to report back if anything descent was found, coord's etc.
Hope the trip there goes well. There is plenty of the yellow stuff up that way.

Wiluna
Hi Evan
I note there are no new posts since March 2011. Did you or any other guys get up that way? I thought I would head that way next year and wanted to know a bit about the Wiluna area's prospects. Does any one know if the area is more heavily mineralised than Golden Triangle in Vic? I will be using a 5000 over there.
cheers
Greg

Hey Hookey13,
There are vast areas of good ground up around that way. Take a look at the maps and check out the old (and newer) workings around the Wiluna area. There are a number of mines still in operation around there too. I was going to head that way earlier this month for a bit but stayed with meeka instead. Maybe next year.

Re: Wiluna area
I was in Wiluna 20 years ago , Has it changed? Is it safe there? It was the worst place i have ever stayed in. My car was broken into , i was told to move from my bar stool as i may be speared by locals thru the wire mesh dividing the black and white section of the pub.. The van park had 6 ft fence with barbed wire.. Its the only place i slept with a handgun in my swag...
There was a massive fight in the street.
But i did buy about 15 grams of gold from a dealer in the van park for $300.
I would love to go back , but if its the same, i wouldnt take a female there or kids..
Just my 2 bobs worth from my experience there...
Beautiful country, and the Canning stock route is a great drive...

Never Made It
Gday all, I never did make it out that far (Wiluna) last season as I ended up spending the entire trip around the Sandstone area.
I Did'nt do too badly there finding just shy of 200 Grams , Considering lots of lost days due to rain, road closures etc.
But I did get to meet some wonderful people from all over the place and from Sandstone itself.
Most of whom I met whilst out detecting or during the Many Many hours spent propping up the Bar at the pub with my mate Eddie ( Pedro), Having a drink with some Great Aussie characters like Nugget Dundee, Trouty, Scruffy and Horrible. (true Names)
So i'll have to have a try at checking Wiluna out this year perhaps??
Cheers Evan

Re: Wiluna area
Hi Evan,in my last post I talked about getting over to WA Gold fields. Well it will be a reality come June. Have joined a 'Gold Prospecting Australia' tag along and just cannot wait to get over there. Did not realise just how much gear, planning needs to go into a trip like this. I have a mate joining me for the tag along, but he needs to get back home so will fly into Perth and back to Melbourne. After the tag along, I am heading out into the Murchison Region for approx. 2 to 3 weeks on my own. I have Personal locator Beacon (PLB) and will notify local Police as one never knows. I am borrowing my son's GPX 5000 as a spare in case mine plays up. Too far to travel to have a detector break down!!
Should I get lucky, then I will post my finds naturally. I would like to hear from any one doing the same Tag along for the trip commencing 4th June. I know there are likely a million suggestions that one could make for this trip. (I am travelling from Melbourne).
I will be carrying 100 litres of water. Anyone know what the water is like in these areas (from the local towns??)
cheers

Good luck with the tour Hookey, I just had a look at their site, very tempting, though WA tours booked up for this year, gives me time to get better at this detecting thing

Re: Wiluna area
I passed through Wiluna when I came down the Gunbarrel in Sept last year. It seems like any other small mining town in the goldfields except maybe a bit more untidy.
100 litres is the minimum I would recommend for someone going out bush for 3 or 4 days at a time. I think the water in Wiluna is not bad.

The water in Wiluna is fine. and so are the surrounding areas. If you get stuck mate the local homestead owners are lovely people in that area. I had alot to do with them a number of years back and found them delightful people. Stay out of Wiluna on a Thursday though as it is dole/pension day and can be a sight for sore eyes.

see you on the 4th June. I am leaving Melbourne around the 26th May with my mate for the tag a Long. My mate is flying home from Wiluna via Perth after it. I am heading out on my own for a few weeks still around the East Murchison area as am in no rush to get home. I am really looking forward to doing this trip. Hope we find some gold although the trip it self should be heaps of fun! I guess we will be camped on gold!! Look out for a black 100 series Landcruiser with roof rack.

Wiluna
Hi Guys,
Just back from a week long trip out to Mt Eureka, 138 kms east of Wiluna on the Gun Barrell, and managed to find find a few bits and pieces. Most of the prospective areas out here are under exploration lease and a section 20A will be required. We found it pretty well flogged close to the highway, but still managed to pick up a few tidlers. The photo below is of the gold we found over a 2 week period between Leinster and Mt Eureka. Just over 2 ounces for about 60 nuggets. We had 2 GPX 5000's and a GPX 4500, running NF 17"eliptical, a 14" NF eliptical and an 18" eliptical Nugget Tech coil. The weather this time of the year is magic, although it does get chilly in the evening. We found the Gun Barrell Highway in good condition, other than an area near the Jundee turnoff that had been ripped up a bit by the big cattle trucks moving cattle out of the area. Its mustering time up there at the moment. We found the road from Wiluna to Meekathara bloody rough most of the way. Next time I'll drive down the Gold Fields hIghway to Leinster.
There's no phone comms out there so you'll need a sat phone. I use a SPOT ME, to let the missus know we are all ok. Great little tool.
We found the water in Wiluna ok, but boiled it prior to drinking, just in case. Fuel prices were reasonable, I think we payed $1.62 a litre for diesel. Food was expensive but hey, what would you expect. $80 for a carton of Gold XXXX was a bit rich though. Just a note on the beer, you will need to drop into the local police station and let them know you want to buy beer. Something about not selling it to the locals.

This photo is of an area about 16 kms north of Mt Eureka. Amazing granite outcrops worth a look. On the way out we got to see an amazing water hole. We didn't stop for any photo's but the wild life around there was amazing. Lots of wild camels, roo's emu's and bird life, plus plenty of cattle.
