the GPX 6000

Yeah it's a nifty looking machine but it is difficult to see it working in the water, All those digital radio transmitions might not be too flash in water. Still I guess there has been a lot of design and development put into it. You would not think that they would come up with a gadget such as it is and not have it work any better than a simple analogue or micro processor controled wired detector hey?

At nearly 2 grand US it would want to be reasonably good.

What do we want in the new 6000 you ask, well how long is a piece of string ??

firstly this is a very hard question to answer as the more features we all want the more the machine will cost !!!
The minelabs are a very very good piece of specialised equipment however the price in my opinion is over the top !

The new machines need to take a fairly large jump in current features rather than just little tweaks as we have seen in the addition of the 5000..

- Personally i think the overall look and design layout of the machine is good and can stay..
- The box and controls could do with being fully sealed (water proof)
- The leads would benefit from possibly having milspec sealed plugs ( downfall here is all the stuff we already own would now be useless )
- A large jump in depth and extra fine gold settings are are must !! lets face it all the easy stuff is gone and you have to revist old areas and hope like hell someone else has been sloppy in working the area..
- The machine needs to come with 2x batteries as standard at no extra cost... come-on what rechargeble tools these days only comes with one battery !! even a bunnings special drill at $35.00 comes with a protective case, 2x batteries and 100 piece drill and tip set...
- Finaly a screen that displays an indication of what the target may be.. this technology is already out there and some very cheap machines already have this as a feature and they appear to be surpisingly accurate..

Also, a deeper timing than normal, but quieter, even if I had to give up some sensitivity

An overall improvement in quality that reflects the $6000+ price tag; better quality power cable and coil connectors; stronger stems not the cheap glue on crap which comes apart after a couple of months of continous use; a harness that actually fits a female or slim male, or even a harness/backpack option; a quick flip dedicated pinpointing mode.

How about being totally shock proof with a super super hard shaft & coil! Detect Pick & Shovel all in one? Could also have an inbuilt reel if the fish are on the bite!
And has already been stated, without a doubt all time winner, the stubby cooler, Gets my vote!

Someday here is a stubby cooler incorperated into the box cover (I made it for a battery, the battery now sits under the box) worked well that can was still cool after a 1/2 hour walk in Nov in NQ.

Yesterday I bought my GPX5000 so I hope that Minelab don't release a new machine too soon. Is there somebody who can help me with the settings? I would really appreciate this.

`Full depth discrimination`would be handy for those that like to leave gold behind.
If the Junk is only shallow,stop whinging,dig it and get onto the next target.Digging rubbish is part and parcel of this hobbie.
I dug 49 bits of tin plate out of a square mtr a few weeks back. Target #50 was a .45 nugget and it only took 1/2 an hr.
Remember,surface junk hides deeper nuggets.

Lee -- can you pls show some photos about how you rigged up the battery under the control box pls? Is there a risk of battery damage (they are expensive) and is the weight a problem? Do you use bungy and hip stick ? cheers.

Somebody already eluded to it, but three simple letters, .......G.....P.....S....

And simple audible target identification - 'gold', 'iron', 'lead', 'tin', 'junk', 'unknown' or 'other'. Then its up to you if you dig or not, but as they say, dig every target.

I'm all for depth increase ... from what I've seen so far, if we are looking for a serious improvement (not merely a bit of this & a bit of that) DEPTH is the major need for any prospector ... AND the most financially rewarding, in the long run

Stronger detecting capability = more people SERIOUSLY considering the New Purchase!!

When the new 6000 or 5100 is released it may well provide more depth using ground penetrating radar.... Minelab and Niitek are combining their technology in this new handheld detector. Here's the link to the announcement.

Now THAT will be something worth waiting for and taking out a bank loan! If they can translate that technology to gold detection ... the world is our oyster!! DEFINITELY interested in THAT new development

Could that be the next quantum leap after PI detectors took over from VLF machines?
I wonder how deep that technology is able to penetrate into the ground and for what size objects?

hi australia, sorry for my poor english,
the deus is a very good light weight WI FI detector (wi fi between the remote control, the headphones and the coil) ; the weight is amazing compare to my 4500.
the stem is fantastic (i use it with my 4500 carried in hipmont) , you can put the detector easyly in a little back pack.

But but.........................., its a VLF : good dicrimination but impossible to good as deep as my 4500 can (on verry easy soils, so you imagine in very mineralized conditions !! !!!!)
So to improv the next model in europe we need :
a LIGHTER unit !!!!
a wifi connexion between headphones and unit (not the coil !!!), you dont imagine the feeling of freedom of this system .
an improvement of dicrimination deeper than now ( something like 80 % of the signal).
lightweight batterys.
A reduction of the blanking time on iron (to run the detector correctly on a trashy area)......
a longer coil cable to carry it safetly in hipmont (2.5 meter minimum).
waterproof coil like the coiltek platypus......


But once again if minelab loose some part of market with his VLF years after years (PI is a marginal market in europe), it's because of the weight of their unit and the lake of the unit-headphone wi fi on their models.

just a thought, i.m thinking that the new detector wont be a gpx. the reason i'm thinking this is that they made sd 2000. sd 2100, sd 2200 then gp extreme, gp 3000, gp 3500, then the gpx 4000, gpx 4500, gpx 5000... each lot comes in 3's so that makes me think it wont be a gpx but something different, could be wrong

It should have an inbuilt scanner that senses when you are digging and then scans to make sure you filled in the hole. If you don't it shuts down the detector for a while. It would after all be in the companies long term interests to have such a feature.

we'd better say a big 'NO' to that, otherwise Minelab gets the wrong idea ! And I hope they're not being calibrated for 'chinese' hot ground
If they want to charge 8 and half grand for it, it better be a 'big' step forward again, so people can recoup their money with the finds.....

I heard it was sent back because it did not have the stubby cooler in place as per my suggestion & I reckon JP made a good decision too because it gets bloody hot up here & no-one likes hot beer.
