There's at least one forum operator using them and he speaks highly of them too.
Apparently the Rhinos have a function where you can seek the other person's location and it shows you on the screen.
Very cool!

If you're not in need of a GPS inclusive 2 Way Radio or you already have a GPS, these work a treat and are excellent value!
We purchased a pair of these the other day from Dick Smith electronics which are simply fantastic for $256 for a pair with batteries!

At the moment they are available 2 for the price of 1 on line . Got 1 for xmas liked it and now have 3. The main feature of polling a contact for his/her position is great with goto contact function. The radio is 5 watt 80 channel unit that can send text measures as well (stops snooping on the gold fields ) The GPS has 2000 waypoint. This the only problem that I have with it. I have been using Magellan since 1995 (old multiplex unit - nearly useless) and have the meridian platinum. Although it has only 500 waypoint, you can have unlimited files of 500 wpt that can be loaded with out removing the SD card. I keep a record of all my patches and some exceed 500 and I split the into north and south.

Does anyone know how to overcome this problem with the Garmin other than having multiple micro SD cards.

Would have been handy when my wife broke her ankle a couple of years ago.
Luckily I heard her screams ........

Garmin Rhinos only available from the USA, Garmin Australia do not support there import because of frequency interference's with our services.

I have owned a Rhino for six years.
The GPS works well and is easy to use.
The radio is strong and the compass is accurate (better now with the newer ones).
The battery lasts a long time and the unit charges up quickly.
If you hunt with a partner who also has a Rhino, when you key your radio
your location shows up on your partners screen - a very cool feature.

I have a friend who has serious heart condition.
A group of us chipped in and bought him a pair of Rhino's to use when he went detecting.
That way, whoever was hunting with him, could use the other unit
He had an extra measure of safety should anything happen to him.

I don't know whether or not a Rhino interferes with Australian radio frequencies,
and I do not think carrying it while detecting interfere's with the detector (I carry it high on my pack harness).
Using a number of free sites on the internet, I have downloaded highly detailed (7.5) topo-maps
for specific areas I hunt which are 'way better than the supplied maps,
and Garmin has improved their maps lately as well.
Although this was their first release of the Rhino
and it was a touch expensive, I have never regretted owning one.

I reckon there will be a lot of specials with 40 channel UHF radios as they will withdrawn from being sold in the future.

Messages should be able to be sent within radio range (claimed to be 32km, line of sight), will do some tests and post results.

The Garmin Rino 650 is again available from Johnny Appleseed (2 for price of 1)
The ability to know exactly where your contacts are at any time is a great benefit when vision is interrupted by the terrain.
Radio or you can send a private note up to 13 letters. We have "Got one!" note installed permanently, simply click on the contact you want to send the private message too.
These units can obtain satellites under tree or indoors under a tiled roof.
Very happy with our purchase, my partner feels a great deal more comfortable out in the scrub knowing she can find me or me her at any time. (She can get lost in the bathroom?)
