Re: Somedays sluice
Hey Mr professional sluice maker SOMEDAY
Whats the best design on a spray bar... Im thinking of a '|_|' shape with the pump feeding into one tip of the "|_|' at the top of the hopper and the cross bar at the bottom spraying up the hopper to hopefully delay the fall out of material & chop it up more against gravity as the hopper is quite short.
Just like standard (below) but the spraybar reversed

Re: Somedays sluice
Hey Jerry
Just looking at that pic & your explanation, the water inlet to the spray bar is better coming in at the bottom of the U just replace one of the bends with a T, this will give you better distribution of the water flow & pressure, I think you also need more holes in your spray bar of a smaller size, the key is start small as you can always enlarge, your ? about putting another bar across the front, this will most likely become a pain in the rear as it will be an obstacle for the shovel or a target.
Hope this helps.

Re: Somedays sluice
All good its just an example pic.
My hopper will only fit a small about at a time (sluice is only 6in wide), maybe half a shovel slowly fed after classifying to 1/2 inch.
Thanks, I'll feed it from the bottom then. will be better on the fittings too i guess as less weight of hose up high on the front.
Although it might be a pain I think I will do the bottom bar just to help hold stuff in the box as much as possible. Lol I'm in no hurry.
Hopefully all this pissing about with metal will give me enough confidence working with metal to build a beaut Banjo like you guys one day soon.
wood I can do.. metal, not so lol

WooHoo Whiskers ain't leaven
Jerry in all honesty, go with the Banjo plans that Ark linked too
cause if I do many more mods to my sluice I'll end up with a close replica of those plans
My opinion of what your trying to create?
You would need to know the max amount of water your sluice can handle without washing out gold
that way you can build a spray bar system to achieve that flow rate.
Spray bar pushing against the material ay?
If you could place that bar under the classifier you could be on a winner if your hopper is built similar to the banjo!
Mate there's nothing wrong building a sluice outu wood, do you know why manufacturers build there gear lightweight?
Because it's cheap to freight!

Re: Somedays sluice
Tried out the new catch tray under the old hopper trick
My take on this add-on, first class, don't leave home without one!
Anyone considering making a highbanker, make the catch tray a priority in your sluice design, no if's or but's about it!!

Re: Somedays sluice
Wow really that good?
So instead of a flat section under the hopper outlet should one just make a small removable tray?

Re: Somedays sluice
Yes ! Is that not obvious from the plans ? Let me know why you are confused ? The tray is directly under the outlet from the sluice but one important thing has happened in the banjo and that is it has already come down a slick plate as you can see and has started to stratify already then when it come out of the tray it has another slick plate to stratify again before the riffles ! If you set the angles right the tray will catch up to 95% of the gold and the losses out the end have in my experience not worth worrying about ! Example 3 hrs digging = 3 grms ,rerun tailings ,mega tin sands , didn't quite make 2 grains ! I'm happy with that !! When someone says " my sluice dosent loose gold " I smile and nod and walk away !

Sluicing, The fine art of sharing, Some just like to share more in gold sailing out the end and in the oversize pile
Jerry, just make sure you build your hopper on the lines of the banjo plans, that in itself is a winner.

Lol someday how true !!! Levelled a big pile of sand one time and it was the easiest 3 grms I ever got !! So I got the gold for making his mess look a lot better !! I do hope he got good gold from his efforts !

Re: Somedays sluice
Someday mate the catch tray in that position dose and will work great. Slick areas is the key I have seen it time and time again when cleaning out my unit first comes the sand then the black sands followed by a carpet of gold. If your quick enough and have a pan handy you can capture the gold without the need to pan the gold out from the concentrates. As Ark has stated I also have picked up grams from other peoples wash. I think it is not so much what they are using but in the way they are using the equipment. People hop straight into banking with no real knowledge of what they are doing I mean these people cant even pan right but yet they seem to think they will make a killing. In this game there is no short cuts ya got to follow the steps which lead up to progression. It is then and only then that they will get good gold. I see all types of units on the net all claiming to be the ducks gut’s I look at the hoppers the punch plates extra and smile to myself thinking yer right. It is a bit like people who bang on about bilge pumps and highbankers as soon as I hear people talking this kind of talk I know just how much gold they will get their only playing around. But then having said all of the above I do love seeing this happen more gold for me.

Re: Somedays sluice
G'day James, yep was quite blown away with the lack of heavy black sand down the rest of the sluice.
Normally the small catch tray in the centre would have a wall of heavy black sands tucked in behind the riffle, Not to be
The catch tray has basically made my riffle section obsolete, though I'm not going to remove them just yet!!
after the 4 hour run I cleaned the riffle section into a separate bucket for a grand total of 20 dust specs,
Given the type of gold I was diggen, thats amazing!
other peoples tailings, I was out Eldy about 8 months ago having a looksee, found a very recent tailings pile, did a quick pan,
the big flakes of gold lost to those tailings was scary, the share factor was running high with this one

Re: Somedays sluice
The share factor is running high up this way too mate, I love it. Yes that tray can help you a lot, more so when sampling poor areas. I test the tray every half hour in poor ground I do this just by slipping it out and panning it off then replacing the tray. This can be done without a shut down.
Cheers mate James.

Re: Somedays sluice
I would imagine the share factor could well contribute to some good finds on grounds otherwise passed by
Me "waterfall" tray always did a great job the gold tray under the hopper has just added a whole new dimension to my HB.
Now I'm wondering if the poofteenth of gold dust found in the riffle section was all the riffles were capable of catching?
might try and run some felt under the riffles which should help prove yay or nay! or just go heaps smaller with the riffles??

Re: Somedays sluice
The "waterfall" tray would work well in the position you have it placed, and the new tray oh yes it would be a whole new dimension for your banker mate. We only run with the one tray under the hopper it dose the job required of it rather well. I would run a bit of hessian instead of felt under the riffles that way you can burn it off when required. All the plastic stuff around today burns well but ..........
