Adrian, I am on the wrong side of 75, have the Flu shot every year and cannot remember when I last had a cold or the Flu, so getting the Flu does not bother me, but the C Virus, that's another thing.

If I get it, I think I will survive, but don't know about SWMBO who is probably not as fit/healthy as me. So I will take all the precautions.

Probably will load the Gov App on my phone, SWMBO, probably not.

I remember DR Norman swan saying at the start of this pandemic ,if we play our cards right we'll get off fairly lightly.
He stated something a long the lines of,I'm happy to be proven wrong 6 or 8 weeks down the track ,meaning we have got it right and it didn't get out of control.
So, it looks like we [touch wood] may have dodged a bullet, just don't get complacent.
New yorkers ordered to wear mask outside at all times, trump blaming WHO,WHO blaming trump, who's on first and whats on second geez it's all a bit crazy. What a Face affraid

I tend to feel that if we had not had these lock downs that the total deaths from the corona v would be the same as with the lock downs.
Laughing

The evidence from  o/s  suggests that this in not the case. Without a lock down the death toll would be very much higher!

Thanks Kon! Very Happy   A common sense and logical response. Our infection growth rate today is down to .77.We can win this battle so please guys lets keep it up and show together  with NZ the way forward!.

Re Trump and WHO,
For once I tend to agree with him, re WHO is China Centric

Saw On TV a Journo from Taiwan, asking a WHO representative, why when Taiwan ask WHO about the Virus in China in Dec? why WHO did not reply. The Guy pretended he did not hear the question went quiet for about 15sec, then said he did not hear the question, She asked the question again and he turned off the interview.

Fellas, I'm quite sure the "finger of blame" will be pointed in more than one direction, the moment the world starts getting back on its feet, but for the time being, we the people of Australia, must do the right thing & continue to do the right thing, in order to have this virus under control/manageable, till some form of vaccine or cure comes to light. If all the current stats read true, a few more weeks adhering to the rules/restrictions set down before us, is not to much to ask for, in the hope of getting our lives back on track.
As for the cost to our economy, we can only take things one day at a time, for no one can see whats to come, but you can bet on one thing, where there's a will to survive, man will find a way.

I think for establishments like WHO it was a case of dammed if you do ,or dammed if you don't.
Call a pandemic to early and spook the worlds economy is a big call,it may have reduced the virus spread, then they may have been ridiculed because not much eventuated as the virus fizzled.
They waited a couple of weeks to see how the virus was panning out and bingo it went feral rather quickly and the rest they say is history.
Can't do much about the old "what if's"
Just got to hang in there guys & gals Very Happy

18000 flu cases were reported for april last year in Australia and yet 60 cases reported till april the 15th this year.My question .Does anyone find this odd.Or am l just being paranoid thinking they might be cooking the books and marking people with normal flu as covid19 cases????? https://www.immunisationcoalition.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/15Apr-Aust-Flu-Stats-2020.pdf

I saw on the news last night that there could be a World class action against China for over 11 trillion dollars in compensation for not getting the word out earlier than they did. If it goes ahead and the World wins it could break China's economy for decades.

My daughter in Sydney has been looking into the so called laws governing our activities during this situation.
There are no Laws in place, the fines being issued are by police discretion. NSW has no limit on how far you can travel for exercise. (daughter is a fitness fanatic). You can meet up for walking/exercise with one other person but a bloke got fined for stopping to buy a kebab while on a run.

We are allowed to buy takeaway food and to exercise but it would seem that the police are having trouble deciding whether it is ok to do both at the same time.

Ye Gods and little fishes. Have people lost their minds completely.

Adrian, With the low number of infected people that we have here in australia, it is statistically unlikely that you would know anyone with it.

Can I ask you what action you think the government should have taken when a highly infectious virus came onto our island?
Just let it spread, or try to stop it?

Problem is that people with it can spread it while they show no symptoms at all, so by the time you know somebody with it, you also have it. Then you will complain that the government didn't do enough to stop it!

I don't know anyone personally with it, but do know of 3 cases from overseas that have resulted in death. I also have a friend who works in a hospital here who has seen first hand coronavirus patients.

If you think it is all a load of sh!t, then go to one of the hospitals with patients on intensive care and go and sit next to them for a while.

FFS, just stay at home, the longer we all do this the sooner we can have our freedoms back! Don't continue the spread, just stay in bed!! Laughing

Dave, I know not of anyone, that wouldn't want to see this new viral crises come to an end, including me, but it is what it is & I do believe our government is/has taken the right steps in order to get on top of it, so that we all can get back on with our normal everyday lives once more.
A nearby cure is only wishful thinking by me, but if enough money is invested/pumped into anything, miracles can & do happen. Mean time we just have to stay positive.
Mistakes for what ever the reason, deliberate or not, will continue to happen, for this is the path man inadvertently takes from time to time, but blind Freddy, will continue to remain blind, as long as profit takes priority over all things, as is in this case of this corona virus outbreak, for if proper hygiene standard's were to be properly managed/enforced, instead of turning a blind eye to, all this might have never occurred in the first place.

I think that what is being done to control this virus is working but what I do not understand is why the same precautions are not taken during flu season because the flu is highly contagious, it is deadly to people with weak immune systems, like the corona virus it is carried in your body for up to two weeks while incubating and it is contagious during this time and the reason far more people contract the flu than the corona virus and why those who die is because we do not take any precautions to stop it other than suggesting people get a flu shot. Why is it ok to spread the flu to many hundreds of thousands of people and to let approx 100,000 people die from this virus but not ok for the corona virus and instead, destroy the worlds economy.

When the various flu strains eventuated there were no vaccines and the world was not placed in lock down.

I have had a flu virus once (do not know which one it was). Started out as a bit of a cold sniffle and within a few days had progressed to bloody awful. A week in bed unable to think clearly and feeling so freaking crook I did not think I would make it. 8 weeks later it had pretty much cleared up although there are days when I think it never went away completely......So don't anybody tell me the flu is nothing. That was a very long time ago and I have not had the flu since then and colds are few and far between. I seem to have acquired some immunity to those little bugs.

If you are out and about and think that you might have a bit of a temp from a cold and don't want to get nailed with a random temp check, take a couple of panadol every 5 or 6 hours. That will drop your temp a bit and stop the testers from running around in blind panic screaming Corona!, corona! myyyy corona!! Fine im 1000 dollars We are all gunna die! ....To bad if you just lost your job because of the lock down regs and now have to line up in a cue at C Link and beg for some money just to get by on.

Adrian, we are not the governing officials of this country nor state. They were voted in power by the people, for the people & the measures they have taken in order to save lives from such a crisis, have so far been above reproach.  Now its not going to suit, nor be in the interest of many, but compared to the rest of the world figures/stats, I'v got to give credit to where credit is due, for the results are starting to speak for themselves.
No government would go out of its way to deliberately destroy its own economy when its economy is going good, nor is any one country, a winner here.
As far as I'm concerned, no one asked for this, nor wanted this to happen, for the whole world is paying the price, but for whatever the reason/s it has happened, it is here & there isn't a government in the world, that isn't going nor hasn't gone out of there way, to keep the cost of civilian casualties/lives lost, to an absolute minimum.
BTW, considering the latest news concerning the spread/contraction rate of COVID-19 here in Australia, only a matter of time now, before we see the trickling down/easing up, of stage 3 restrictions.

The answer to this is that we have no immunity to corona virus and no vaccine unlike the flu. Corona virus for reasons that are not understood is also killing some younger apparently healthy people. Its also appears to be far more infectious than the flu and the simultaneous infection of the flu and corona is something that is  really worrying the medical profession. The corona virus will ultimately infect and kill more people globally than any  pandemic since the Spanish flu. We already have 148,000 dead (probably an under estimate!) and over 2.1 million infections. As the infections spread to more countries with poor health systems and little testing the global outcome is grim. Some worst case scenario modeling  suggests that if the world did little or nothing to control the virus then up t0 80% of the global population could ultimately become infected! With a death rate of only 1% I will leave you folk here to work out how many people would die in such a  scenario and what the  global economic consequences would be.

The flu has vaccinations available, corona, none.
We know the long term effects of the flu, we know nothing of this new virus.
The flu has a pretty good herd immunity so not everyone will/can get it, with corona, there in no herd immunity, if let to run its coarse it will infect up to 18,000,000 Aussies and of that we would expect to see about 180,000 deaths or a lot more. And that is on its first trip through.

And to be frank, I don't want this in me, so if you don't give a rats ass about it, please keep your germs to yourself!
Do some research on a bloke called Francis Boyle, find out who he is and what significant things he has done and see if you can find his learned opinion of the corona virus.

Do hospitals normally get over-run during a normal flu season?

There is a small peak in hospitalization during the winter months
Aged care facilities have about a 100% flu vaccination coverage now.
If admitted to an ED department they are generally xrayed and zipped back to the facility with either oral or IV  ab's if pneumonia is confirmed.
Most of the patients from aged care have their wishes for resus in order.
Admission from the community have dropped also due to vaccination and pneumonia vacs as well.
So it has improved since the 80's

Mick. Have you seen what the flu does to the older people who die from it. Not a pretty sight mate. Gasping for breath, bleeding lungs, that have been infected by pneumonia, Falling into a coma. Bleeding kidneys and liver and bleeding in the brain....Just like those who die from the corona virus.
How do I know? well I had pneumonia twice that developed from a simple cold and each time ended up in a coma and in hosp for two weeks each time. The only reason that I know I was in a coma is because Mum told me. I have no memory of it and very little memory of being in hospital.
The reason we do not see a massive surge in hospitalisations from the flu is because there is no Gov and media induced panic associated with it.

Ask the 1000s of people in Australia and 100,000 world wide who annually have lost family members to the flu as to whether it is a minor virus.
If ever there should be a lock down it is during flu season.
