Coil cover tape Empty Coil cover tape

Post  Fisherman Sun Jul 05, 2009 2:29 pm

G day all i was just taping a cover on and run out of Coiltek tape, so i reached for the first aid kit and grabbed out the leukoplast, a good cloth tape, i thought better do a quick google and lo and behold it contains Zink Oxide in the addhesive and possibly the cloth.
While i don't think the miniscule amounts would have an effect plus motion detector and all that, is there anything we might have in the cubbard we could use in an emergency?
Cheers

Gday Brett

Sometime back I heard that you can use the Lukosilk (not sure about the spelling?) tape, available from the chemist , on coils as well, the amounts of minerals in the tape you describe would not be significant enough in my mind to have any effect on the coil, so I wouldnt be too concerned.

I was also told that you shouldnt use electrical tape on them either but still I have seen coils with it on so who knows, I know that some plastics do or used to contain lead so that was the reasoning behind not using it, but in a pinch I cant see a small amount being an issue.

The coil tape that you buy is quite thick so it not only serves to hold the skid plate in place but also offers some cushioning to the side of the coil to give it a bit of protection against damage from hitting rocks, any coils that I use a lot, I often put several layers of tape on to save it from side damage, the tapes cheaper than a replacement skid plate or coil.

cheers

Thanks stayyerAu
Wrapping a couple of layers around sounds like a good idea.

Coiltek in Maryborough has either white or black tape.
Goldsearch in Dunolly has white tape
Trackline in Bendigo has white tape
"Leukosilk" also is suitable

Gday Goldstalker
Reeds in Perth will sell and post you the tape, their service is great I've found.
Back in the 70's when we were running the old Garrets we always used ordinary insul tape with no adverse affects. I'm not using it now, only the coil tape from Reeds but if I was stuck I'd give it a go again.
You'll find their details on this site under Suppliers from memory.
cheers
Brett

CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHERE AND WHAT KIND OF TAPE IS NEEDED FOR THE SKID PLATES..THANKS

Hi Oakwood,

We have some rolls of the tape used on the NF coils in stock. Drop me an email or call and I can get some on the way. Or, you can use any tape that isn't conductive. Just run the coil over the tape, if it beeps don't use it. If you have one of the SL coils, you might try a few zip-ties(or tape) around the spokes. I have done a few of my coils and it works well. Only problem is you have to cut them off when cleaning out debris beneath the skid.

I must admit I am abit surprised nobody has put this up on the board > If you are chasing Leukosilk for your coils head on down to the local chemist they should have meters of the stuff, failing that check out your local St John Ambulance Office Coil cover tape Icon_biggrin

Coil cover tape Empty Tape over Coil

Post  Goldanfish Sun Dec 20, 2009 7:18 pm

What about the old reliable Duct Tape, I was a plumber and still have yards of it in the shed .

Or better still the 100 mile an hour tape that they use to hold race cars together in races, still got some of that to.

Does any of this tape work.

Yeah they probably will but you'll find that in the heat of the day they will most likely start to peel off. Spend the $8 or so dollars and be assured it won't let you down.

Robert

PS when you come to replace the tape use a product called "Dissolve-it" to remove the glue residue. It's available at most large hardwares and supermarkets.

I also found TURPS works OK too.
