Now Jig,

You really should be talking to Kim or Lincoln at mudgee.... but i guess the world is realising the yanks are in trouble and need the money!!!
They should be able to tell you where you could get them in Aus, if AZO is renochris?, then JP might have 'em.

Thanks Ferris,

I went to the Arizona Outback site and was most surprised to see a map of Australia under "Arizona Outback" on their logo. Have we been taken over by these septic tanks ?

There is no way I ordered it from that site - there must be somebody in Australia that imports them. I have looked around at all the shops and can't find it though. Somebody here might point me in the right direction.

Tuna's camo would be a disaster. Every day when he starts detecting, he has to sit down and think " will I take the left fork or the right fork today" . I know how he held it on though - a stitch in tine ...........................

I don't actually want it for the camo, I want it because the two straps over the top are wide and cover the entire top.

G'day Jig, not exactly what you are after but worth having a look at.
I have one of these, well made and made local.

Just a point of clairification - Reno Chris and Chris Gholson of AZO are two different people.

I write for a prospecting and mining magazine (see www.ICMJ.com), and the only thing I sell is my book.

Chris Gholson is a full service prospecting dealer selling Minelab as well as other detectors and various accessories.

Hey Jig

who are you calling a septic tank???and why? Chris G has had a close and personal association with both the USA and Australia...so he combined Arizona and The Outback for a distinctive identity... I think your dispersion is uncalled for and without merit...

Gday

Fred dont be too offended mate, the slang term "septic tank" just means "yank", nothing more, is the Arizona outback site still operating? havent been on it for awhile.

Jigalong, Reeds prospecting had some pretty sturdy looking control box covers in stock, with pockets etc, dont think they were any camo ones though, might be worth a look.

Chris Gholson from AZO has had a long association with Australia, he has been out here on two separate occasions with me prospecting, one in Far North QLD and another one with his father to WA back in 2006 along with numerous trips with Doug Stone and also Bob Armstrong, so I think he has earned the right to have the Australian connection with his business.

I used to distribute the AZO product line but Chris and I have since gone our separate ways business wise so have no idea who in Australia stocks them now, it might pay to contact Tony Mills at Gold Search Australia.

Aurum Australis (my business name) stock an equivalent Control box cover but it is a single colour not cammo like the AZO version. Chris Gholsons webs site has just had an overhaul and can be found at HERE.

JP

PS Fred "Septic Tank" is a term of endearment dating back to my grandfathers years during the second world war, but can be offensive if taken the wrong way.

JP,

I must have purchased it from your shop, as I have twice rung up and ordered those great, green gold scoops.

I don't give a rat's about the camo, I just like that AZO cover because it has wide straps that covered the entire top of the detector housing (instead of the narrow straps the others seem to have).

Fred,

Sorry, did not mean for you to take a fence. I was not casting nasturtiums !

Goldstalker,

Thanks, Yes Double D do great gear- I have his deluxe harness and it is beautifully made and a perfect design. His control box cover though, has little narrow straps over the top.

I wonder if Arizona Outback would go to the trouble of supplying one twenty buck cover to Australia. One way to find out I guess, although the freight will probably be more than the cost of the cover.

Thanks all.

Jigalong.

Jig, the ones we stock also have wide straps as well as the stiffening in the base where the feet go to stop chaffing through.

Post  granite2 Fri Oct 01, 2010 10:59 am

It has got me buggered why camo has become a popular thing. I have even seen a camper van and a ute or two painted camo, sure sign of a death wish. I have also seen picks in camo as well as hats, and would you believe, mobile phones.

I once hurriedly stripped off my detector and went for a crap. My detector had a camo box cover, backpack and coiltek terra cotta coil that blended in with the ground. Embarassed It took me ten minutes to find my detector and I don't mind saying, I was beginning to panic. albino The guy with the camo phone lost it many times and it once sat on the counter of Coiltek Gold centre for a full day until he rang his phone from another, even when it was ringing it was had to see sitting on some pamplets. rabbit I was once given a camo cap but lost it when I hung it on a dead mulga right next to the fire. Rolling Eyes

Instead of camo we should be having fleuro green or red covers so we don't lose the darned things.

Cheers Jim. cheers

All real men should wear at least one item of camo at all times, just in case the big one kicks off .........WW3! we can all then be ready to hide in the bush until all press ganged conscripts have been taken away.

Jigalong,

If you can't get AZO to send you one...something I'm pretty sure they'd do...
drop me a pm and I will get one and send it to you.

I am using the blue camo cover and although (of course), I get some funny looks
I don't really care, it's easy to spot out there in all those miles of brown and it works well.

All the best,

I'm with you Jim, I too have put my detector down with all the camo gear to walk back to the ute to get a drink and taken the next 15 minutes, 5 of which was in panic mode, to find it again. I've since painted my pick handle blue. I should look at the blue camo; that would match just nice.
Is the idea of camo gear so we can sneak around unsighted on spots we're not supposed to?

NO! But if I'm on open ground (if I'm visible) people will stop and watch. If I'm within view of the road, they'll stop their car to watch and eat their lunch as well. The advantage of Camo is that it breaks up the shape of the person and it also has the desirable ability to mask dirt, stains and marks. By wearing Camo I can operate quietly and at my own pace without the concern of drawing attention to my activities. People who detect on ground they are not supposed to be on tend to do so at night.

The detector itself benefits from the application of a Control Box Cover no matter what color or pattern is on it. The goal is to protect the detector from unwanted knocks and bumps during transit. For those people wanting to get top dollar in the event of selling or upgrading their detector in the future, the protection factor is essential. Just protecting the legs is usually enough ...although it pays to remove your cover once in a while to remove any dirt or small stones that might have found their way between the covers and the sides of the detector.

This is going to roll a few eyes but I always utilize triple protection on my detectors - which is a little bit of Overkill: Cling Wrap on the feet, an Aurum Australis Control Box Cover on the body and then a custom Control Box Cover on the outside. The cling wrap keeps the feet from getting scratched by dirt that accidentally enters the cover during digging. The Aurum Australis Cover is soft and protects the unit well from scratches. The outer covers are simply an additional buffer that matches other equipment but is rugged and prevents damage from harder impacts. All covers are washable. Too many covers out there are too hard and can cause abrasion when sand gets trapped. I saw a GPX once which had the entire side sandpapered from sand being trapped between a hard cover and the control box. Most of the text was missing on the side of the box. The owner claimed to have never removed the cover.

The detector is a tool to be used. But not everyone will want (or need) to put more than one cover on theirs. Many use no cover at all.

Jeez, you Aussies have some strange slang...I don't see much endearment in being called that...but, understatement has been elevated beyond an artform in Oz...sorry for my reaction...

Crikey Marco are you Irish? To be sure, to be sure, to be sure. Smile Not real big on cammo meself but each to their own I guess. I find that the thin leather control box cover with the velcro straps are all Ive ever needed. Just the basics to keep scratches off it (bar the legs). I have never had a problem with grit getting in and scratching it as I only have it on fairly loose so it doesnt bother.
Fred, some Aussies do have some strange slang for sure. I thought you would have come across it first hand on some of your prospecting trips out here?
Anyhow, gotta go and have a "Rodney Hog". Or one more seppo friendly, a "Larry Bird". Basketball cheers
