GPX 4500 turns off with a bump !!!
Has anyone had a situation with their detector switching off by itself with a simple bump on the coil or at the control box ?
This has just happened to me in the triangle today. Turned off about 6 times then I gave up on the trip. Even a bump to the coil during a swing was tripping it out. I will send it to minelab but just curious if it a common problem.
Cheers and hope the new year bring you some gold. Bill

Re: GPX 4500 turns off with a bump !!!
Hi Vasilis,
I recall something like that a few years back - it turned out to be a crook power lead - a break in the wire that would make/break with any bump. I also seem to recall a dodgy power switch on a GPX4000 I had that did something similar. If you've got a spare lead you might want to try that first.
Cheers, Andy

Re: GPX 4500 turns off with a bump !!!
Think it probably has something to do with the power lead rather than the detector.
That is where I would start trouble-shooting.
Some Minelabs get loose on/off switch connectors.
It can be fixed by taking off the back plate and tightening the connector
although if I am not mistaken opening up the detector also voids the warrantee.
I have done this twice on different machines and each time the little problem I had was fixed
(although it was not the problem you describe, that is a weird one).
Good luck with it.

G'day Alaskan bob
Your reply is neither helpful nor constructive, and even lacks humor. You may be new here but answers like that to a post or question are not required.
"IS a rock a rock isnt a broken connection a broken connection buddy ??"
An intermittent fault in an electircal cable can be just that, a broken wire and as the cable moves, (which is the case the the power lead on a detector) you get an intermittent power connection.
I would certainly be trying a new power lead, and if its not that well its a good idea to have a spare lead anyhow.
cheers dave

Re: GPX 4500 turns off with a bump !!!
Thanks for the feedback once again. I did not suspect the power lead because the switching off is sudden. As if the on/off button is triggered.
When I had problems with the lead in the past the symptoms where very different so I did not focus on this but worth a try. My spare lead was also broken so end of the road with testing on the day.
Cheers for that comeback Dave. Perhaps that pony I ride needs to be exchanged for the plug in type from the showgrounds.
Cheers to all. Vasilis

Re: GPX 4500 turns off with a bump !!!
On the odd occasion, the power lead can send a trip signal to the battery, and you will have to plug it into the cig lighter or home charger to un trip the battery.
Had this problem with the 4000, ML said it was an intermittent lead fault.....however the first thing one does is use a spare/borrowed lead and when the fault is still present, you look to the unit. Took them a couple of attempts to find the problem which i believe was both lead and unit at fault.
Got a brand new 4500 lead and a working unit back at the end of the exercise.

Re: GPX 4500 turns off with a bump !!!
Once again thanks for the replies and troubleshooting the problem. I am sure it is a fault in the control box and sending it back for repairs.
When all connected up and with the lead held in my hand so no movement occurs I give the control box a gentle slap on the top and off she goes. If you ask me this could be a new method for the on/off button or perhaps a voice recognition so when you swear it also turns off !!!
cheers Vasilis
