Post  gold bug sniper Fri Dec 18, 2015 12:24 pm

Does anyone know, is there any difference in the two machines, the new re-issue and the old 4500's. Is one better than the other? Where is the new re-issue model made? And where is the old 4500 made? I am considering buying either a used 5000 or a new reissue 4500 before next spring. Has anyone tested the new reissue 4500 against the old 4500's?

I asked the same question a while back and no one would discuss the matter openly, but beating around the bush and asking questions of seasoned original 4500 users that are on top of the game, I think the general consensus is you couldn't pry an original 4500 out of their dead hands with a crowbar, and personally I think those who made the new minelab technology leap may be feeling anguish pains. I have owned 3 x 4500's the first two Australian and the last, one of the re-released 4500's, in my opinion the export 4500 is a different machine in terms of quietness and stability, or perhaps my first two were not of the quality of the export model. My first 4500 was so damn noisy it went straight back to Minelab because of the noise, "within specifications" and the second was just as noisy, I could not believe that the export 4500 was the same model machine when I turned it on..........that's my two bobs worth

Happy New Year to everyone. I have the new 4500 (2015) as well as a 5000 (2011) and older 4500 (2009). The current release of the GPX 4500 runs as quietly as the 5000 yet it appears to maintain the detecting depth of the original 4500. I was pleasantly surprised by its performance and ability to run smoothly even in mineralised ground. I am not sure whether Minelab made any internal changes to the original components/electronics or if the pre-existing technology has been optimised/brought up to current specifications?

Cheers De

Hello Country girl & gold bug sniper.

My mates and I have put this situation to the test, pitting one of the last of the older 4500’s V the new 4500.
To say as some think, that they are exactly the same is not quite so.

In our exhaustive in-ground testing, we have found a number of things that differ.
Firstly the Ground balance on the new release 45, mimics the GPX 5000; it is a lot quicker to G/B than the old 4500, and is a fair bit quieter over hot changeable ground too.

When testing the 2 of them over gold in the ground; the new 45 literally cleaned up the old one on the smaller nuggets at fairly shallow depths, but when the nuggets were bigger and down deeper, the old 4500 showed its stuff, pulling away by some margin.

The general consensus was that the newer 4500, is just like the 5000 without the Fine-Gold timing and almost a dead ringer in most ways. I like many others have had a GPX5000 (Mine for over 12 months), and eventually went back to the older 4500’s.

We like them for their raw power on the big gold at depth in hot ground, sure they are a little noisy, but if you can put up with that, you should do very well.

Cheers and good luck with yours.  PM me if you want some figures.

Ozgold.

I think I am on my 4th or 5th 4500 at the moment I have a new 45 I figured that any updates over the years to this model and possible 5000 would be don't to this re release of the 4500 and so fare I am very happy with it at $3300 plus 3 years warranty you cannot ask for any better deal . The last 45 I had was the last of the Australian models and it ran like a dream with the new 4500 they are as good or just a little bit better regards john Very Happy

This is an interesting question. Is the implication that the new 4500's potentially have a 5000 board inside but just with the 5000-centric timings removed?

Hi there John, Why so many 4500. What was wrong with the first, 2nd, 3rd & 4th one. Do you still have them all or did you buy sell buy sell.....& if so....why. You obviously love the 4500 but were there issues with some of them?

Good luck out there

Kiwijw,
Your question was exactly what I was thinking, Ironbark and Delepan owning several 45's? Probably two or three different vehicles in the same time span?
Bought our 4500's from first release and wouldn't dream of parting with them.

to answer your question
number one went to south Africa at a good price
purchased number 2 4500 a week after number one was sold then traded it in on a new 5000 when they were released
sold that after about 3 1/2 years thinking the new detector was dew so that did not happen ,so got a extreme to fill in to the new detector was released that did not happen .After using the extreme for about a year decided to get another 4500 this is number 3 it was a good detector.
number 4 is a new 4500 that I have at the moment good price good warranty and finding gold cannot ask for any better than that regards john Very Happy

Hi John, Thanks for the reply. Must have been a bit of a backward step going from the 4500/5000 to an extreme. Are you able to tell us the difference & how noticeable it was? Cheers

JW we got 2 extremes at the same time mine came from the USA and it had a ground balance button fitted to it I mostly used a NF 14x7 on it .It was a very good detector the other extreme was a dog not good at all mine ran stable I was using a 12v battery regulated to 6.7 volts at Tibooburra my mate using a 5000 could believe how good it was ,but I think after using a 4500 and a 5000 my detecting techniques had changed so that's how I was using the extreme ,on wet ground it was just a bit noisy that's why I sold it
these new 4500 are great with the 12 nf I cannot believe the depth I am getting small pieces of gold at ,this is only my opinion but I believe the 4500 do not get as much emi as the 5000 regards john Very Happy

Thanks for all the info on the gpx machines, I think for what i want to use it for a new 4500 is what I may buy before spring, have used a gpx4000 for last 3 yrs, should be an easy transition, am holding out til maybe April to buy since Whites is supposed to be debuting some new nugget detector and I want to see what thats all about before buying this next spring. Have heard some good things, about it from friends in my area, it was being tested in our area not long ago. Not so sure this new tech is gonna surpass the pulse detectors like they said it is, but maybe. The new Elite/Evo coils have leveled the playing field quite a bit between new tech and gpx's.

I was told Whites have had a big shack up from top to bottom hope they do some good as to give ML a big shack up as far as prices .The new 4500 are good the trick is to run them with a stable threshold on mine I am only running the rx and gain at 9 with great results regards john Very Happy

Thanks for all the informative input on the reissue gpx 4500, I finally decide to just buy a new reissue gpx 4500, I shopped hard and got a killer deal on one returned to the dealer after being used for an hour, warranty intact, like new still, @ 1850.00 usd shipped. So I am back in business again ready for spring time nugget hunting season. The Elite 14" coil I bought has really breathed new life into the GPX line, I am super happy with the combo, may even pick up some more Elite coils, not sure I want to swing the 18" but the 11" looks promising. Winter is on its last legs here so we will be out hunting soon.

I love my old issue 4500...the only one I have and first PI I owned is working as good as the first day I bought it from a friend. I won't be upgrading until I see a significant technological advance in Discrimination abilities on any new detector from Minelab. I have to admit the zed intrigues me...lots of positive reviews here in the U.S. about its ability to hit small gold at depth. I just have this feeling...something great is coming around the corner. Until than, its the 45 and some new coils...and a lot of work!!
