G'day Steven4wd.Welcome to the Forum.

The motto here is try before you buy. Steve see if you could hire out a GPX series first before you buy.The later GPX 5000 does what the other two of its predecessors do but with more silent stealth tactics, better EMI handling characteristics, and a few extra gismos(modes & timings) to play with, such as a dedicated coin and relic mode,if you so desire to operate for coins/relics on benign ground. The next best thing i could recommend would have to be the GPX 4500.

Cheers kon61.

Big Chop

The only machine that gives the 45 a run for its money and in my eyes a "floggin" too
is the GPX5000.

Hi Big Chop welcome to the forum.
As a general rule, the newer the technology, the better the machine.

Hi Bigchop
There are percentage differences with each new model.Out of the gpextreme Gp3000 and Gp3500 The 3500 is the better machine. Its quiter than the other two and has the advantage of of the quick track button on the handle.
The gpx machines are adjustable and an extra timing or timings have been added. These timings set the Gpx series apart from the Sd and Gp series. As the majority of gold is found in the first 18 inches these new timings make the gpx series more sensitive in this area.
Little is known on the difference in the timings on the gpx series (JP Could have the answers)From what Ive heard (theory ?) the timing on the Gpx4000 was opened slightly for the gpx4500 and Ive heard nix on whether on the gpx5000 has the same timing as the Gpx4500 with an added fine gold timing.
I suppose the big question is that if anyone is on a budget do you pay $6000 plus for an new machine or buy a secondhand one.
To me that answer is easy. All secondhand machines will hold their value until the release of any new model(minimum a year away)That gives plenty of time to try and learn the basics
Cheers Dig

I will throw a twirly one in as i have heard on the good old grapevine that if you fit an enhancer onto a 3500, bingo a 5000 equivalant or you can whack one on a 400 for a bit more depth ,hope this helps al

I don't want to spoil what you have heard but, it will take a lot more than an enhancer to make a 3500 = to a 5000 or a 4500 for that matter.

cheers dave

3500 versus 4500
Just from our experiences will let you know what we have found through tesring.
We had a patch where we were finding small .1 to .8gram bits with the occasional bit to 5grams. The area was the size of a small suburban house block. When we founs this area we phones up some friends who had a 3500 and they met up with us a few days later (WA) I'll call our friend pete, well he could not get one signal at all and even when we found a very good target signal he could still not pick it up. We played around with his settings on the 3500 for about half a day and even changes coils from his machine to our machine (4500) and never found any benefits. This area was good as we were digging holes next to each other and were averaging 50 to 80 bits a day, we were excited but only got up in morning when we felt like it and stopped for breaks, lunch ect. not mad at it. In the end we found targets and pete dug them and then recovered what he could then detect. Needless to say he was on the phone to reeds in perth who sent up a new 4500 in the post to closest posr office. We pulled out over 18 oz from that small area and could not find any targets within coowee of the spot. We did go back to spot following year but only got couple small bits so cleaned it up well.
Just our experience with detectors
