Hi, has any body had any luck running the 11dd or 15x12dd on there 5000 yet.
I was just wondering about the blade like penatration and quiet running of th dd
is the dd less likely to miss gold if your a bit slack on your swing after half a day
what about sensitivity on the 11dd compared to the 11 mono, what are differences in depth on
the same ground and ability to get the 0.1-0.2gm bits.
Cheers Abbagold.

G'day Abbagold

There is no comparision, a Minelab Commander mono 11" or 8" will get the small bits as well as the bigger bits. Just run the machine in "fine gold" or "enhance" crank the gain up a bit and drop the stabalizer a bit to quieten it down and run the audio in "deep" or "boost" which is what I prefer on my 4500 and you will wonder why you ever thought about using a "Double D" coil.

Here is a pic of small gold and a few bigger bits using 4500's with Minelab Commander Mono's both 11" & 8", this was during the last few weeks.

Hey ABBAGOLD!

Can't say about 5000 specifically, but double D blade-like search patern covers ground more evenly, sure.
But not deeper or with more sensitivity.

I think if your swing suffers when you are tired, you are most likely to get something with small mono than any DD of same or larger size. Just because it will pick up faint signals better than DD. And when you are sloppy with the swing, every good target will be a faint one Smile

PS i do ocasionaly use a DD, but nowadays only to work closer to powerlines and such.

ABBAGOLD, I know nothing - I will swing my GPX-4000 for the first time tomorrow after getting it only last week. However, the training guy told me to immediately ditch my 11"dd standard coil as it is old technology and to immediately attach my monocoil (14" x 9"). I have been told to use only monocoils and to tune my ear for them, full stop. I intend to take this advice. Incidentally, I was also told that if I felt like giving up for lack of finds, that I should instead buy the latest tiny-weeny Nugget Finder monocoil to find the little bits of gold that are most commonly found. I didn't get the measurements, but it looked like about 6" x 4"? I might even take that advice too.

I've used the supplied 11" DD coil very successfully with the GPX 5000. You can either use Cancel mode for high interference areas or Mono mode for other mineralised places. Mono mode and Cancel mode on the Coil/Rx switch in conjunction with a DD coil and the Fine Gold timings have been very useful for me in certain areas, especially where the ground is shallow (down to 10" or so) and the gold small. Because the 11" coil has much smaller receive windings over a mono coil of the same size it is actually more sensitive on targets close to the coil (generates a brighter response) but you need to be mindful there is a pretty big trade off on outright depth (Cancel mode and Mono mode will not punch as deep as DD mode with a DD coil, and a DD coil in DD mode will not punch as deep as a Mono coil in Mono or DD mode even using Enhance or Fine Gold).

The other thing I should point out, it is not recommended to use a DD coil in DD mode using any of the "Smooth" type timings especially Fine Gold, however a DD coil in a pseudo mono type Rx mode like Cancel or Mono mode is OK. Another thing of note is a DD coil in either Mono mode or Cancel mode generates their response on the left side and middle of the coil, generally if the target is deep is sounds like the response is coming from the centre of the coil, if shallow more so from the left (helps with pinpointing a target)

Hope this helps,

JP

PS Typical settings I use for a DD coil in Mono mode using a Smooth type timing.

Gain 13
Motion Slow
Audio Deep
Tracking Fixed (Medium speed)
Soil Timings Fine Gold or Enhance
Tone 63
Stabilizer 8
Signal 19
General Search mode

If you go into the Cancel Rx then you can easily crank the Gain to the moon because EMI is virtually non existent, watch out for a bit of coil touch sensitivity though. lol!

I just keep mine turned off, That way it doesn't matter where you put the coil switch. So on that note the mono coil and double D work equally as well no matter what your settings are???? Some day by someday. Cheers Chris.
Sorry about that!

This is the perfect answer to all our worries about settings - keep that machine turned off at all costs. Have you tried promoting this idea more widely to see if it catches on? There are far too many people stressing about trying to find gold. Best if they abandon the search I reckon and go for a more relaxed lifestyle. Twisted Evil

Trust me there's nothing relaxing by leaving my 5000 turned off!
There is an upside, the battery doesn't need charging? Neutral Neutral Neutral

Tried using my 5000 with the DD coil on a salt lake a couple of weeks ago
. Was in cancel mode and using the salt setting and it just kept on nscreaming like a banshee. Tried endless times quieting it down but no joy, so gave up.
Funny thing though, it was purring like a kitten around the outskirts of the lake, but once I starting swinging actually on the lake off it went again screaming.
Go figure

I think you have misunderstood what I was saying Nightjar, do not use a DD coil in DD mode WITH the Smooth Class of timings. Normal, Sharp, Sens Xtra, etc are fine to use with a DD coil just not Smooth, Enhance or Fine Gold. The two do not play well together, in fact in some cases you can actually cause more ground noise not less especially with Fine Gold and a DD coil in DD mode.

Hope this clears the boggles up. scratch lol!
