GPX 5000 and NFA mono coils Empty GPX 5000 and NFA mono coils

Post  goldquest Thu Feb 23, 2012 9:25 pm

Hi, I bought my GPX 5000 last tuesday, I used to use a GPX 4500, in my coils collection there is a 12"x7" NFA, 12" Round NFA, 14"x9" NFA, 18" Round NFA, 11" Mono and 11" DD Commander, ( standard with the 5000 ).
I am thinking to buy a 17"x11" NFA, this is my question, is it a good coil, will serch deeper than the 14" will work well with the 5000, I mostly detect in the Golden Triangle.
Any help from more expert detectorist will be appreciated. Very Happy
Cheers

Hi Goldquest
The 17" is quite sensitive and is a good open ground coil.Quite ofter you will snag small nuggets or specimens at good depth whilst still picking up larger deeper bits often missed by 11" or equivalents. The width gives its sensitivity.Your 12" is probably a close match in depth and sensitivity to the 17".
The 14" as you would expect from a round coil has better depth, good coverage and very light to use all day.
Both coils are well suited to the 5000.As you already have a considerable number of coils I see that there is a gap in your range at the 14" round size so if you really think you need another coil that would be a good choice.

Hi Goldquest,

Looking at your coil collection i would go for the 17x11 NFA,as you already have a 14x9 NFA and it is close to a 14 NFA round in performance. The bigger elliptical will give you more ground coverage and as deutran has said is a very sensitive coil.I have both the 12 round NFA and 17x11 NFA coils and have dug deep targets with both coils, and i use the 17x11 NFA as my standard coil.If i need more depth to cover the deeper search range still,i have a 16 NFA which is nearly as good as a n 18 NFA round...but the bigger coil will go a little deeper.

You have a great collection of coils there Smile

Cheers Bill

Thank you Steve, for your explanation, i was thinking at the 17''x11" because there is non much difference in price with the 14" round, and I found it more difficult to pinpoint with a round coil.

Hi Bill, thank you for answering my question, I was considering the 17"x11" because I found it easier to pinpoint, how does it work with the 5000, considering that i detect in Castlemaine area, and do you use any particular setting that you want to share with me. Very Happy

Hi Giancarlo,

I use the 17x11 NFA on my 4500 and it works great on a variety of nugget sizes and depths, and you are quite right in saying that is easy to pinpoint with it as well.I know that deutran ( Steve ) uses his on a 5000 and he has said that he does like the coil.I have had a bit of EMI interference with it sometimes, but with the bigger coils you have to live with that Smile

Steve may be able to assist with some settings as he has a GPX 5000 now after doing very well with the 4500,and in my opinion he is a very good operator...On the 4500 i usually search in Deep with fixed GB...and in Enhance...Gain of around 10 to 11....and Stabilizer around 5 / 6 or 7...Deep and or Normal Audio...As you know settings must change when noise / conditions are a problem.

Cheers Bill

Hello again Steve, I can see that you are from Inglewood, some time I go in Dunolly area, do you have any special setting that I can use with 5000 and 14"x9" NFA, like I said I bought my detector this week and I need all the help that I can get, I hope that I don't ask too much.
Cheers

Hi Goldquest
Some of the settings can be changed to suit individual preferences, these would include tone, audio settings and Vol Limit. The main objective is to have it running smooth under the conditions you are working.I can give you my current setup and you can work from there.

General
Switch to Special and select Fine gold in the menu or switch to Enhance (Try both whichever you prefer)
Fixed Tracking
Mono

Vol Limit 7 for headphones 14 for speaker
Rx 12-16.Start at 12 and if Emi is OK bring it up to 14.
Motion Slow or Very slow
Audio Type N
Audio Tone 53
Stabilizer 8,Signal 17.I don't usually change these.
Target Vol 8-14.Start at 8 for quiet operation.Bring up higher if using a speaker.
Response N
Iron reject off.

Initially auto tune and watch the display you will hear the quietest frequency range find something from 40-130.
Bring your threshold up until its just smooth.
The 4500's and 5000's are very sensitive to gold even when using very conservative settings. If the settings are too high particularly RX and Target vol you may find yourself introducing unnecessary noise and digging a lot of false signals.
If conditions are bad you can go to a smaller coil or reduce the RX.
Good luck
Steve

Thank you Steve for your kind replay, I will try the new setting and I will let you know the result. Wink
