Interesting, especially the part about the national hand washing guidelines not coming until the 1980's.
I remember in 1965 that in prep school part of our kit was a bar of soap and towel in a bag and at certain times of the day we were taken out to the sinks and washed our hands.

Mum would not let us out of the house to go to school without washing our hands with good old Lux soap. We had to wash our hands before sitting down to any meal. That was back in the 50s. That is all there was to wash with back then until these airy fairy useless conditioners and gells came into being.
