Easter Monday Mine
I have found the top shaft many times & enjoy heading there for a look now & again.
HOWEVER on Sat I ventured in the trusty Zook through some very muddy & questionable tracks in search of a special spot (which I never found ) & finally came across the mine entrance I have heard so much about.
I thought it's pretty cool & someone might like the pics.
If you think of venturing there with anything less than big A/T tyres or full M/T tyres like I have forget about it lol.
No I didn't venture inside although would love to.

Re: Easter Monday Mine
Is this mine the one at Blackwood ? You know this the area where the infamous big black cat is alleged to be hiding ?
I used to ride motorbikes around there & the thick brush is impenetrable in a lot of places ,so there would be plenty of places for it & it`s kin to hide.
I must say that the cat in the picture is definitely not it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don`t rib me on this. I have had a big tattoo of this beast on my arm for years.
Love going into these tunnels, though. Helps cure my claustrophobia

Re: Easter Monday Mine
Hi Jerry,
Been there in my falcon ute Upon driving down the narrow muddy track to the mine entrance I started to think this does not look good but made it there and out again just as it started to rain. Made it back up the hill by the skin of my teeth....
The shaft had lots of water along the entrance tunnel and I had no gum boots so I didn't go in for a look-see. Didn't find any gold on the heaps either.
Cheers Mick

Re: Easter Monday Mine
Scary mofos lol
Yep the bush is so bloody thick you go 50mtrs off the main track and turn around then have no idea where u came from. The track to the mine is closed so had to walk it but the tracks too it a 4x4 only atm. most of the area is TBH as the puddles that look shallow end up coming over the bumper.
It was looking warm & dry in the tunnel but dunno how keen I'd be to venture in even with lights etc. Would be quite an adventure with someone experienced though.

Chances are you will find a few . Here is a map of the mine area with the mine marked with a purple cross & the co-ordinates up the top of the map.
There are a lot of mines in that area.
Might even have a look myself on my next trip over to Yandoit.

Re: Easter Monday Mine
I know of a mine in Daylesford, used to go to it in the 1960s wonder if it is still there, noting that there was always water coming out of it back then. as I am not going to visit it any time soon I would be happy if some one who lives there would check it out, have Google earthed the site but there are trees there now which makes it hard to see BUT it is on a made and major road and literally minutes from Daylesford. there was other interesting stuff there then as well, as it also had a crusher which was removed but could see the foundations for it! There was also a Puddler or possibly a dam for the Crusher when it was producing! Message me!

Had another Google Earth look at it and the area is now different a NEWER image of just a few months there has been some clearing there and if they are putting a house there some one should tell them that there is literally heaps of mercury in the soil! I know I used to get heaps of it when I repanned tailings of my father! Literally used to be a silver bottom in my gold pan and I had a well used old half groove pan!

Re: Easter Monday Mine
Most of the mines in the blackwood area are all deep vertical shafts.
I know of a few horizontal ones around Dalesford as above.
Shallower leads there maybe. I know like Easter Monday most in that area the gold was deep deep deep down & they had to crush tons of quartz to get it out.

Re: Easter Monday Mine
If you venture into an unfamiliar mine, make sure you leave some-one outside in case of a cave in. They will be able to get rescue crews to the site, it might also be a good idea to record the lats & longs to help rescue find the place.
It all sounds very exciting though!

Re: Easter Monday Mine
I had a combination smoke detector and Co2 detector. I wonder if these are useful for those who like to explore mines. I guess there would be portable Co2 detectors specially made for confined spaces. Stay safe

One also needs not only a Co2 meter but a methane meter, Have a friend who is a Professional Mine Rescue officer for a major underground mining company, he said both are available but he didn't know the prices of such gear he just says We need it and it is purchased!

Re: Easter Monday Mine
I am in a great mood this evening re my post about being given a new still in the unopened box Minelab Detector xt17000 so for our friends out there who would like an easy recon job about a Mine (Tunnel) near Daylesford
On the corner of Jubilee lake road and Patterson street there should be the remains of a Mullock heap, back in 1969 Don Mahoney (Miners Den) and my father did major sluicing of that heap, there was still significant gold there, Under Patterson street about 60 metres from the first corner (not the intersection) there is the tunnel for that Mullock heap, Now I used to pan their tailings in a little stream of water coming out of the tunnel and still used to get mercury and gold from their tailings but it was fine. that stream went to a dam or Puddling machine I was young at the time so do not remember everything about it but there was also the footings for a crusher there. Now there was an awful lot of ore that was dumped untreated because it was in those days uneconomical ore that is the gold my father and Don Mahoney were after, however my father became very sick and so had to stop and Don went onto other things! Cobb and Co and Miners Den!
Any body who wants to have a look I don't know the current status of the ownership of the land but one can see it on google earth just type in the street name! And it is on major roads less than a mile or so from Daylesford Proper!

Re: Easter Monday Mine
It is the actual corner block, Paterson street goes up and takes a right hand turn about 50 metres from the Patterson/ Jubilee Creek road intersection the tunnel goes under the road on Paterson street about 60 metres up from that RH corner. If you google earth it and go to street view you can see what it looks like now when I was there, there were NO trees that I remember except the Pine tree!
