They are often called Sun Dogs and generally indicate rain on the way. This one is a bit late coz it has been raining buckets for the past two days while today was fine. Maybe it is going to rain tomorrow.

Well there goes our plum tree.
Best year ever , It was chockers with more plums than it has ever had in the past. 38 yeas old
But! after a few days of heavy rain and laden with plums it called it quits and fell over.
Tossing up whether to straighten it up and see if it will sprout again or to dig it out

Re: Off Topic Nikon P900/1000
what a pity, I'd try and straighten it up and put numerous large rocks around it's base.
I did this with our princess gumtree after rain and heavy winds loosened it, it's been fine ever since.
Just depends on the tap root being intact?
Nice prune job though

Yeah, when I prune something it stays pruned.
Tap root is ok (I think) but I have run out of energy. Might have to get someone else to fix it.
Have no idea why I put that concrete ring around it, It was just a twig with a couple of leaves when first planted and a good 8 to 10 mtr high when it went down. Maybe I will square it off and turn it into a garden table.

Re: Off Topic Nikon P900/1000
maybe just leave it ,chuck a few more rocks round the base and see if it start to shoots.
The arrow is pointing to the original upright trunk; when it fell it obviously became horizontal.
All the experts in the land said stand it back up or pull it out, I just chopped it off and just left it and placed some weights around it.
Totally different tree, but it may put up new vertical shoots?[sorry for turning your thread into gardening Australia ]

Re: Off Topic Nikon P900/1000
It appeared to fall over easy enough but it sure doesn't want to straighten up. Think I may need a block and tackle....If I can find something to tie it off to.
Hmmmm Maybe a stick of gelignite will do the job.

Big CME eruption on the far side of the sun the other day. (16/02/22) The white ring in the centre represents the sun on this scale.
That is a substantial BURP.
This eruption has originated in a very large sun spot that should rotate into view in a few days time and with a bit of luck it will fire off some more CME and X-Ray bursts in our direction and take out a few more Star Link satellites.
From Space Weather.com.
Quote:
Whatever it is, it's big enough to affect the way the surface of the sun vibrates. Researchers at Stanford University are using helioseismology to map the farside
They've detected something big at the same location.
The timing and location of this active region suggest that it is old sunspot AR2936--the same sunspot that brought down multiple Starlink satelites in early February. It has grown during its transit around the farside of the sun, and could pose an even greater threat when it returns in a few days. Unquote:
Oh goody goody I can't wait. Bring it on!

Re: Off Topic Nikon P900/1000
Yeah and scaled down to Earth size that would be bit like Mount Etna blasting smoke ash and lava visibly 8000 km into space. the difference being is that the CME from the sun just keeps going for billions of km at well over a million kph which would be on average, approx 3 days to get to us.

10 years of solar activity.

Starlink, ISS and all other orbiting satellites will be doomed when the next big CME solar store hits Earth. Yaaaaaay.....And it will happen, just a matter of time.

Re: Off Topic Nikon P900/1000
Out bush a couple of days ago munching on a roast vege focaccia n washing it down with a take away latte (Life is tough these days) when this bloke dropped in. A real "Blow In" Then suddenly I had 5 crows stalking around me eyeing off my focaccia.
End result was they had more of my lunch than I did.

Yer should have seen the insides. Could have planted spuds in it.
Those cooling fans might cool OK but they also suck dust in from the outside. Should also be an extractor fan to blow the dust back outside before it has time to settle.

Your insect probably belongs to this species, although the link only mentions the northern Hemisphere?
