I am beginning to think that my fuzz ball is/was a white cockatoo at approx 1/2 to 1 k distant.
April 2020:
Not a cockatoo. It was in three pics roughly 1 min apart. beets me.

Re: Off Topic Nikon P900/1000
Awesome shots Adrian, you finally talked me into buying one before they are all gone on the web since its a discontinued model now, the P1000 is the active latest model now but too large to carry well. We ordered a P900 kit w/64 gig card and two batts, bag, couple days ago off Amazon, will use in Nevada when out gold detecting to try and get some wild horse photos and some antelope shots. Maybe get lucky and find some wild burro's too. I think the macro shots are very good, should be excellent indoor with proper lighting added.

Re: Off Topic Nikon P900/1000
You are certainly going to the right places to get some great shots.
Good luck on the trip.
I had a look at the 3000x cam and it is a heavy beast and the tripod mount is poorly placed. Have not been able to try one out. Whenever I get to the shop the battery is flat. ??. I guess this camera is mainly for those who need a really big zoom. Being able to take pics in RAW plus the hot shoe mount is an advantage.
I will be staying with the 900 for a while yet.

Re: Off Topic Nikon P900/1000
New visitor to our back yard arrived this arvo,
Gang Gang Cockatoos.
Very chilled out birds showing complete nonplus to our approach to within 1/2 a mtr.
Unusual to see them here at this time of the year. Maybe the fires have chased them here
17/01/24
Loss of older, hollow trees and loss of feeding habitat across south-eastern Australia through land clearing has led to a significant reduction in the numbers of this cockatoo in recent years. As a result, the gang-gang is now listed as vulnerable in New South Wales. It is protected as a vulnerable species under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 (NSW). This protection status as a threatened species makes it a Tier 1 criminal offence for a person or corporation to knowingly damage the bird's habitat.Damage is defined to include "damage caused by removing any part of the habitat". Habitat is defined to include "an area periodically or occasionally occupied by a species".
In July 2021, an Australian Department of the Environment and Energy spokesperson stated the population has declined by approximately 69% in the last three generations, or 21 years and in addition to this decline, the species has suffered direct mortality and habitat loss during the 2019–20 Australian bushfire season. Between 28 and 36 per cent of the species' distribution was impacted by the fires.[18] As a result, it is set to be listed as endangered under the threatened fauna of Australia.[19]

Well I've never ever heard of them or seen them ! They appear slightly smaller than a white cockatoo maybe theve been used to being feed :?:Do they sound the same as a white cockatoo Normally i'm dead set against feeding wild life ,but in these trying times I've thrown the rule book out ,so was in IGA today ,thought i'd get some cheap bird seed for apostle bird 's ,willy wagtails ,kurrawong's ,magpies ,finches ,but came away empty handed ,GAWD TALK ABOUT SELECTION of pet food ,I thought us consumers were bombarded enough with too much selection I thought maybe one of those blocks with seed I know cocky seed easy enough ,but what about those birds I mentioned ,any ideas

Re: Off Topic Nikon P900/1000
G/day Hugh62.
Yes we used to not feed them but they seem to be struggling a bit these days so we supply them food and water daily.
Generally there is not a bird in sight but about a minute after putting food out the yard is chockers with cockatoos, galahs, crested pigeons, black birds, even the magpies have taken to eating seed, and at night a possum arrives that cleans up what the birds have left behind.
The Gang Gangs live along the SE coast low land areas and come into the higher ground during winter but this is the earliest that I have seen them in my back yard, so am guessing that the fires have moved them inland a bit early. These birds are by nature very tolerant of people and will allow you to get quite close. They are very noisy in flight but when feeding or perched in a tree they make a sound a bit like a cork being unscrewed from a bottle. When feeding they actually sort of make a quiet growling sound, very odd to hear from a bird.
Our magpies and Currawong like a bit of red meat (beef mince)and cheese and the occasional crumbly biscuit.
We give the small birds....wait for it! wait for it!...."Small bird seed", but the little sons of guns seem to like the parrot food as well.
I have not seen an apostle bird but They are ground feeders so I imagine that small grass parrot seeds would be fine for this fella.
You could try the seed blocks. I find that when I leave a seed block out that the cockatoos demolish it quick smart. I even spotted one fly off with the whole block in its beak.

Yes approximately but could be twice as large if you include the other stuff around it. I do not have a solar scope and H Alpha filters , so pics are a bit vague.

Adrian, very impressed with your results from the Nikon P900.
First Nikon I had was an ELW bought in Singapore 50 years ago. It was a revelation. Later got a Nikon FE compact and last of the pre electronic cameras. Only camera at the moment is a little Panasonic Lumix DC vario which was just over $100. Handy size and not bad pics but hardly in the Nikon class. Now I am getting a powerful urge to get the Nikon P900.
The camera is said to have an inbuilt GPS which automatically logs your location. A couple of snaps of the area where you found your nugget would be a great accessory. I had previously bought a GPS but my tiny brain could never really understand how to use it. Does your camera have GPS and have you tried it?

Harry/Adrian, I found their summary towards the end to be surprisingly honest and accurate. From my perspective generally very good, but focus can be fiddly and low light such as night shots then forget it.

Auto focus is the way to go at night if your subject is within range of the inbuilt range finding red light. Otherwise select manual focus. If your subject is at long distance then select infinity or any night shooting mode.
The manual focus can be allocated to the LH side zoom control and is a bit faster than the thumb wheel control.
I do agree tho that overall the manual focus arrangement of the P900 is pathetic.... The P1000 has a focus ring

Re: Off Topic Nikon P900/1000
Have a lot to learn here. Fitted a 2 X 300 lens and zoomed but it was still a fly peck. Don't know what I did wrong? However we did see the Space Station pass over us in a couple of minutes.
Re: Off Topic Nikon P900/1000
I have not tried to photograph the space station but I reckon you would need at least 50x to see any shape to it and even then the brightness of the thing might obscure any features.
Using a movie cam with a good zoom would be ok and then you could go through the recorded frames to find a reasonable image...if yer lucky. You might have to crop the image to bring any shape out.
Computer controlled scopes won't be able to track it coz it is a bit fast at 18,000 mph and only approx 300 km up.
A 6 inch or larger Dobsonian would be handy because they are easy to move manually in az and alt. Strap a movie cam to the scope and track visually through the finder or eyepiece or fit the cam to the scope eyepiece and track visually through the finder scope.

Have ordered a little Star Tracker to set my camera on for night sky shots.
Will be interesting to see if it is of any real use?
Also an equatorial mount type adapter to set to the mount to the correct latitude.
