some real learnings GPX500
Found a wee little .17g nuggy the other day and buggered around up in the workshop doing some tests with it......
So as we all know stuffing around with the 5000 in town is a pain in the butt but if you put on the DD coil, go to cancel mode and drop the Gain to about 5 you can achieve a smooth tone...
so...having done that......I played around with the .17g bit and, even at that low gain, got a clear and unmistakable signal at 70mm.... Now that is pretty good me thinks considering how much I had dumb downed the machine......
OK so what did I learn.....and here"s the drum......
Unless you are running proper boosters blah blah blah, (Jonathon Porter says this and I having proven his opinion so thanks John for you posts ) the inbuilt amplifier is NOT strong enough to use an external speaker alone.......this is because to hear the signal of my little nugget at 70mm I had to turn down the threshold so it was just above the machine noise (11:30 on the dial) and using the speaker (wired correctly) I had to have the threshold turned to about 2:00 oclock to hear the bloody thing and lost that wee signal....
So the lesson is.....use headphones unless you have a booster system...........set threshold as low as you can but still hear it......target volume up a bit...
there it is .........Obi Wan.....
***** I hope all that made sense......
i am now Obi Wan because I have finally found gold so I know it all........
