No worries Jen

Dried foodstuffs come in handy and can be cooked up with fresh ingredients
A couple that are great are dried or fried shallots and dried peas, dried shrimp are all great
Whole pumpkin will keep for weeks and makes great pumpkin soup, add some curry paste and coconut cream and it's a whole new level of pumpkin soup.
Now you have got me started............ So I'll stop right here
Preparing for the trip can get very can sometimes be the hard part
All the best on the trip and get the boys to do some cooking as well, just tell them I need to dig the Gold you missed........:-)

I popped in and got my thermal cooker today. it comes with an insulated bag as well which is good. I'll have to search out some recipes and give it a go. I'm also researching up on their little fridges which someone told me have 12 volt DC compressors in them which can therefore be easily modified to run from a 12 volt source.

Smoked cod was on special yesterday so bought some, cooked it up, flaked and removed the bones, made some bechamel sauce added the fish and yum, delicious over some rice. Enough left over, so cryovaced and now in the freezer, will be handy when travelling.

I get some  good deals from my local  Woolies.    Just picked up 6 packets  of smoked   salmon   200 grms.  for reduced price $3.60   from  $8.99.  I should have got some more and put them in the freezer .   On the full old age pension, I cannot afford    $8.99      Laughing  Laughing  Laughing

Yummy, yummy !!!!

Kettles , " only big enough for one or two people " They are 2.5 lts. , are you going to drink 1.25 lts. ? It will be good for your health but you will have to run out side more often !

My only winge is that they are not built very strong . But for $13 it is a good deal .

Hey MinerMike
The kettle you brought is the bigger one, to the camping pack I brought..
The kettle that came in the camping pack only holds about 2 and a half cups of water..  Very Happy
Big enough for two.. Just..
I only ever try to put enough water in my kettle to make the amount of hot drinks I am making at the time.
Save on gas  Laughing

I only try and put enough water in my electric jug, for what I want, at home. Why boil double the amount of water, like some people do, for a double size electricity bill ?

when you are only making say... ONE Cuppa.

That reminds me.. Time for a cuppa  Laughing

But make sure you cover the element, with water. Other wise you will be buying a new jug.

Yummy, yummy !!!!

Smoked salmon, im lucky to half a pilchard on mouldy crust.

Back in the day, 30 years ago, it was just a piece of cold coal for breakfast, that was when we lived in the shoe box in the middle of the road.....

Here's a little item I saw recently at our supermarket, by my calculations a kilo of this parsley...that's right just plain old parsley Rolling Eyes  will set you back $372.50, you probably don't want this one in the larder Jen, talk about value adding!..is this a sign of our times?, I mean I like a little parsley as much as the next camper but WTF!!!  No .

Wayne. cheers

Yeah Wayne
A bit of parsley is nice, but if the prices get to dear.
Well we will just go without. Laughing

V02 Even the other spices can get costly..
Specially the ones we tend to use most days when we cook.

Also the good cooks love to use their spices... Yummy..

2 cups plain  flour
2 cups self raising flour
1 Teaspoon salt
1 Tablespoon sugar

1 can of fizzy drink.. Beer.. Lemonade.. Beer works the best.
Mix well together, that's the hard part.
Cook in hot Dutch oven. Take some hot coals from fire place oven on top. ( still having it close to fire)
Mostly just have a few hot coals underneath, around the base as well,  and some over the top.
Turn the oven at least twice for even heat ( takes about 45min to an hour..)

This repice was given to me by the smilingassain, man! He loves to cook, and eat... Hi Bryan  Q39
scratch  I hope I remmebered that repice right

You can also add a tablespoon of custard powder in the mix. Or whatever..

Served with butter, or jam and cream.. Yummy..
Oh this year I am going to get my bread machine to do the mixing, as I have frozen shoulder too.. For the second time..grrrrrr
Different arm..

Ok who else out there has a great damper repice .. Please   Q10

Thanks jen58. Never thought of putting in any sugar, Sometimes we have tried basic receipe with cheese cut up small and bacon in it.
Comes out like a pizza loaf.

Q33 Good basic recipe there Jen, throw in a tablespoon of baking powder to get a lighter bread, pepper or chopped peppers, cheese and bacon or ham chopped is a favourite, also try mixing in olives and sundried tomatoes for a savoury result or substitute the beer/soda water for milk, fresh ,condensed or carnation with raisins, sultanas or dried apricots etc. and just about any fruit or crushed nuts for a sweeter taste, there's really no limits except your own taste as to what you can add.

Wayne. cheers
