What to cook when away camping
Ok, just out of interest.. What do all you good people cook when out
In the bush?? what do you use?????
For W.A
This year I am taking a bread machine
A dream pot
Cobb cooker, yet to learn how to use it
Cooking over a open fire with BBQ plate
Forgot to add.. Two Camp ovens, son makes a mean damper
I know.. I know... It's probably been said before
Maybe someone has new ideas. Even on how to save water ( and not! By not washing )
Any easy recipe ideas?
Whatever you can think of, I am always learning..

Re: What to cook when away camping
I will start
Dream pot .... For those that don't know it's just a big thermos.
One pickled pork, ( not frozen ) place in pot, cover with just enough water, heat, let simmer for ten minutes
On stove, place into dream pot, after a couple of hours I usually re-heat then place back into
Dream pot, (so the dream pot stays hot over night) I leave it over night, in the morning it's done
But I leave it until lunch time or dinner time..
You can also do this in the morning and it's ready by dinner time.. Yummy..
Comes out really tender..
Can serve with anything, mashed potatoes, veggies.
Can do other meat this way as well, if you do a flavoured roast, I leave it in its bag
or I place meat into oven bags, found that the oven bags sometimes Pop open,
it still comes out yummy and tender
Bugger, now I am hungry

Re: What to cook when away camping
I've got a dream pot or 2 on my shopping list for this year Jen.
We also use a BBQ, a camp oven (Dutch oven) and butane gas hotplates as well as the campfire.
That might sound like overkill but when I go to the West I am usually cooking for at least 12 people.
Cheers
Leanne

Re: What to cook when away camping
Sky's the limit Jen, I cannot see why with a little planning and prep you cant cook anything that you would normally cook at home while your out camping, I have been known to whip up a pretty good feed at times, rice is an all time favourite eaten with curried, stewed pork , chicken, beef, seafood, vegies ,whatever really, there are some brilliant all in one curry sauces that require little to no preparation and produce some great meals and good variety, check the Asian section in your supermarket, pasta is another great bulk meal maker and there is also a great range of ready made sauces available to suit, there's a huge range of different reconstituted dried noodles to produce many dishes and are also good as they require no refrigeration, there is nothing better than fresh vegies but I find tin vegies very convenient to travel and store, likewise with tin fruits, long life milk is a gift from god and saves fridge room again, you have a couple of dutch ovens so your ability to roast any meats is only limited by your ability to refrigerate until required, sometimes after a not so successful day the evening meal is something special to look forward too especially if your partial to a good feed like I am .

hi jen, never seem to get to do it regular enough as normally come into camp late, but camp oven roasts pork, beef chicken, lamb if any left over few slices of bread, meat wrapped in alfoil in my front back pack that is strapped on the motorbikes front mud guard kept cool all day from my spare frozen 3 litre water bottle makes for a great lunch when away from the camp all day swinging

Oh Leanne, you sound like you will be kept busy again this year..
With all that you have ahead of you.
Dream pots are great!
Hey Wayne are you saying you are a when it comes to your tucker
All great ideas there..
I love a mean curry!! Yummy, plan to make some before we leave and freeze it, then vac it
I have limited space in the fridge so all those pasta meals and such are great idea's.
Already use long life milk, as no room in fridge, ( live in caravan )
sounds like you are a great cook! hi Wayne..
Maybe that's what's needed on this trip, if only I could afford one

That's what happens with me, i am not allowed to stay back at camp by myself, which is understandable.
then once the men are ready to head back to camp, we are all too tired to cook, or its way to late, well for me it is..
Great ideas though
Hopefully this year we shall do it a bit different, and make more roasts on the camp fire

errrrrrr..... in a nutshell...yes Its fair to say I like a feed too much, , and yes I consider my cooking skills to be fairly good, only surpassed by my boyish good looks, wit, charm and most of all my modesty

Hey Jen,
Please don't take offence but doubled over laughing here with your mention of two Dutch Ovens, is that both you and Mike?
We usually call them "Camp Ovens" so as not to confuse the issue.
Explanation;
"A Dutch oven is a slang term for while lying in bed with another person, pulling the covers over the person's head while flatulating, thereby creating an unpleasant situation in an enclosed space. This is done as a prank or by accident to one's sleeping partner."
Re: What to cook when away camping
You are so right there Nightjar, I just googled it..
I am glad you got a good laugh from it though
Nothing like being able to have a good laugh about things
Now to go fix my error, yeah I know it's too late
Still gunna do it....
Pete no offence taken.. We are still laughing as well

Re: What to cook when away camping
Here you go Jen, something nice and simple that we do in the cooler months when we can light a fire.
First light that fire. You want long lasting coals.
Next get some aluminium trays, one for each person and put olive oil and a bit of water in each tray. Water is needed to create some steam, but not too much.
Next, dice your vegetables, carrots, potatoes, pumpkin, onions or whatever takes your fancy, and chuck them in the trays.
** Don't cut them up too small, especially the pumpkin. Season the vegetables.
Next dice up your favourite meat, lamb, pork or chicken. (Beef gets too tough) and put the meat on top of the vegetables
Next add salt, pepper, oregano, lemon and maybe garlic to the trays. and a bit more olive oil.
Now wrap the full tray with alfoil so its almost airtight. Fold the foil neatly round the edges of the trays.
When there's enough coals, spread them out and place each wrapped parcel on them. Keep track of which ones yours, don't worry about the others.
** Make sure the coals are spread flat so the olive oil and water don't settle in one end of the tray.
In about 45 minutes they are cooked!
Spend this 45 minutes wisely drinking a shandy or two.
**Take them out with a shovel, they are hot, damned hot! Open carefully, the steam will want to come out in a hurry.
Pour a gravy over them if you like.
.
These parcels can be prepared anytime and put back in the esky until their needed. Also each person can add whatever they prefer to their parcel, so no onebitches complains about too much salt or pepper or whatever.
Try a different meat each night.
**As Kon noted, take all used alfoil and aluminium trays home with you. You don't want alfoil bits blowing all over the goldfields.
For some reason Jen, Kon 61, grasshopper and I, always come back to civilization heavier than when we started out, no matter how many kilometres we've walked! Dunno why..

WOW Shiraz, that one has my interest..
As I was reading down, with those illustration's I was getting hungry.
You sure made it a very simple recipe for me
It is a great and easy recipe idea..
Now is it the food or the drinks that make you guys heavier?
I think it's both!

Re: What to cook when away camping
You're not wrong there Harry.A good hardy meal topped off with a nice beverage can't get any better than this on a still chilly night. You know our motto,If all else fails, make sure you eat and drink well in this game or you'll have little to look forward to getting through the night.
By the way fellow prospectors,if some of you out there cook in a similar fashion,do the right thing by placing your empty aluminium food trays (after discarding any un-eaten food remnants), in some form of rubbish bag and have it disposed of appropriately and not buried in the camp fire.
Ahh this is the life no?
Cheers Kon.

Nothing wrong with a drink or two or even three
Or even more as long as you know your limit
But your right! You have to stay hydrated

My favourite when living rough would have to be oysters Kilpatrick followed by pheasant under cast-iron accompanied by a good Merlot savoured from an enamel mug.

Mmmmm oysters, especially after about 4 days in the clapped out esky. Yum.
9ct make that a Heathcote Shiraz and you got a deal! Just finished bottling a few, hopefully they'll last a while, but somehow I doubt it.

Re: What to cook when away camping
Hey All....
I use the same method as Shiraz but use a de-boned lamb leg, goat or even a lump of beef. Use 3 layers of foil over the tray and leave your pumpkin and spuds chunky. Add a can of beer and a generous dose of BBQ sauce,a knob of butter, chilli flakes plus salt n pepper.
Dig a small pit and light a fire in it. Pile the dirt to one side. Stoke up your main fire at the same time.
Once the coals in the pit have died down slightly put your tray in and cover with coals from your main fire.
Dont mess about here and quickly cover the whole lot with the dirt.
This can be done at 8am and will still be warm at 5pm when you uncover it for dinner.
If done right.....the meat will fall apart
