What to cook when away camping

Gee CostasDee... it sure sounds like you LOVE   your spam..  

Yep don't mind it myself, I like the turkey spam.

   not sure I could eat it for every meal of the day
Although if there was nothing else to eat, it sure would be handy

  Went and did a google... I didn't know it came in such a huge range   
I always thought there was just pork? or turkey, or just plain spam!
I just learnt something   

I did live on half a case of luncheon meat, every day. It was cheaper than Spam. I don't think I have eaten any tins of luncheon meat since !     

I agree with CostasDee, Spam is the best ready made tucker in the world, but I didn`t realize there were so many different varieties   Life has taken on a new meaning as I must now try them all  

Just as good as spam is the beef variety, corned beef.

 I like that too......

Corned beef, fried up with scrambled eggs, heaven in a fry-pan....yummy!!! Maybe throw in a few peas and maybe a few slices of onion.

Rege-PA. being in the USA, you might have all those SPAMs in your supermarkets but here in good ol' Oz, I've only ever seen original, low salt, low fat(lite), hot & spicy, turkey & bacon. Might be a good profit in it for you to organise a few pallet loads to get shipped out to us poor folks here. Looking at Jen's photo, I'd love to give the garlic a go (yummy and extra good for you), also the hawaii and the "with cheese", damn it, I'd like to eat all of them.....mmmm sooooo yummy!!!

See guys, there's enough variety in the the good old SPAM to try a different one for breakfast luch and dinner for about a whole week, and then you can start again, why bother with all those fancy cooking pots and Dutch (  ) ovens and bread makers etc, SPAM has all the variety and goodness you could ever need.   

I'm surprised the spam doesn't come in extra large sizes over there. I could see a chain like the reject shop having a crack at parallel imports of that range. I'd buy all the varieties just to try them all. Can't go much past tinned tuna in oil for a great travelling snack or meal. Salada crackers are very good too.

Ah yes, loved fried Spam and eggs sangas.

Much better than our version, Camp Pie.

We're talking about real food here, MAN FOOD, not all that good-for-you supposed healthy what they call "alternative" food. Next you'll be telling us to spread some cottage cheese on top of your Salada crackers, cause it's good for you....blah. I can eat most things, but camp pie and Devon makes me want to throw up !

Importing other types of Spam can run into problems. My neighbor worked for the Australian Government, checking all food coming into Australia. We did enjoy some nice samples of cheese....

Many years have passed without a can of spam, in a moment of misguided nostalgia for my misspent culinary youth I recently purchased a can of Hot N Spicy spam, I can safely say other than the time I drank from the dead sea   it was the saltiest foulest tasting crap I have ever put in my mouth   have no doubt if that was the only thing available I would eat it but until that day comes, I shall not do it again

Thanks Costa I appreciate what your trying to do, people have prayed before for me and I think it only half worked as it did get me away from the tuna in spring water. I ended up settling on tuna in Oil and when I'm feeling brave Tuna in Oil chili style. Now I think you have helped me sort myself out abit although I wish you hadn't mentioned cottage cheese though as that's really gonna set me back big time. I may even start eating soy products again....   and what to do with the bread maker I bought today.... you have me thinking that baking is kinda girly (no offence Jen and ladies).

It's all a bit of a joke there Waveform, I was only playing around. I eat a bit of the ol' canned tuna too and I prefer it in the oil when I do.
As far as what Jen said, most men cook, well if I didn't do the cooking here at home, my kids would starve - there's only so many toasties and take-away that they can eat...but   

Jen, I got a bread maker some time ago, but I stopped using it as it cost just as much to get the prepared bread mix as it did to do buy a loaf of bread at the shop, plus then you have to add 3 odd hours of electricity...it wasn't viable to do here at home. Out bush, middle of nowhere, a fresh loaf every now and then would be a good thing. Also, experiment by putting something in the dough, I found pitted olives, cut in half to be fantastic. Dates, sultanas, maybe nuts could be other possibilities.

Sorry Costa, I knew you were joking and being a funny bugger. I should have thrown in plenty of smileys

CostasDee, Yes we must pray for the others, but unfortunately I can not get all the varieties either. Some are only produced for regional tastes in the Pacific islands where Spam consumption is the highest, my only hope is to make a pilgrimage to "Jungle Jims" in Ohio, billed as the worlds largest super market and run amok, perhaps there I will find true happiness

Did you know it is almost impossible to find lamb in US super markets?
Troops returning from the two wars swore they would never eat mutton again after consuming tons of Ozi tinned mutton.
This was passed down through the generations and only in the past decade Australian growers have been trying to promote lamb for US retailers.

Funny Nightjar how the wheel turns, my father served in WW11 and as kids we never heard of spam, because he never wanted to eat it again, when I was a teenager I ate some at a friends house and thought it was wonderful.
We only ate oleo as a kid because that`s all we were served until I discovered butter later on.
Lamb or mutton was never served in the house, again because of my Dad eating so much of it. I didn`t eat mutton until 1998 when I was served some in South Africa on a hunt and it was delicious. My children love lamb so you are right it takes awhile and sometimes generations to rediscover these treats.

Ok.... Found something else that's an easy meal..

Plenty of different flavors in the supermarket to choose from.

I just cook any meat that's handy in the freezer to go with it, and veggies.
Or just eat on its own..



What do you others make to go with it??? Any ideas  Please.

Corned beef,baked beans and onion fried up for breaky......mmmmm.....real heart starter that one.

Jen...put the Pasta n sauce down and slowly back away    it has sooooo much preservatives that you will glow in the dark.
Handy should you run out of torch batteries.   

I dont eat Camp pie any more since a extended shooting trip west of Cobar NSW during the late 80's.
There were millions of Flys,and they covered everything. We were so hungry it was a case if close your eyes and eat your Camp pie sangas as fast as you could......
besides a little extra protein never hurt anyone

Longlife thickened cream, grated parmesan cheese, fried onion,bacon, minced garlic from a jar and a dash of Chilli is a great sauce to mix with boiled pasta. You can add tinned carrots or mushrooms before you add it to the pasta for some extra veg.
Healthy , low preservative meal that gives great carb burn for prospecting and keeps well for a few days.

Spam is $3 a can at the moment in Woolies . Bought a few cans as I intend to move north west to some where warmer than Sydney for winter .

You can buy instant noodles in bulk with out flavour sachets
Get some dried shrimp from the Vietnamese stores and add any vegetables and flavours to your liking. You can also add beaten egg, any cooked meats and coconut cream too......... Anything
So simple and great on a winter's night........
