4000 & 4500 coil choice?
Recently there was a post that stated something like, we tend to do what the locals are doing.
Since the release of the 4000 and now the 4500 we can finally get the full use of a mono coil.
My question is: are we overlooking the capabilities of the DD that served us so well for so long? Its very nature gives more of a paint brush stoke, covering the ground very efficiently in its field. If the mono can now be quieted down then what effect does this technological move forward have on the age old faithful DD? In my mind it would make the DD more stable than ever and every noise more definite.
A mono will always punch deeper when swung directly over the target using the centre of the coil. At a guess I would think that the field of a mono that goes deeper than a DD is very concentrated and may only cover 3" square deeper in the same field as a DD. If this is true then, to get the full benefit of a mono coil you may have to make 3 swings over the coil sweep to truly gain an edge over the DD's. This is assuming I was using a DD that was getting a similar depth to the mono. The pin point of a mono can not be beaten but it is a pin point, sort of.
To the not so sure. mono has something like a cone shaped field and the DD has a flat paint brush type field that usually doesn't penetrate as deep.

Re: 4000 & 4500 coil choice?
Gday Echidnadigger i asked the same kind of question about having to use the 14 inch mono in smooth and being able to use the 11 inch dd in extra [gpx 4000]thinking i may be getting the same performance, but after last weekend i find the mono in smooth is more stable [quiet] than the smaller dd in extra with the gain about 8-9 allthough with the dd i was in tracking medium and the mono slow, the gpx 4000 is my first detector and have had it for about a month and half so im still learning the machine so i wont be able to be much help yet but ill post what i find out and anyone is more than welcome to correct me when im just plain wrong or misleading as you may just help me and others learn faster.

Re: 4000 & 4500 coil choice?
Yes I thought the same thing as you that to take advantage of the Mono's extra depth alot of overlapping has to occur because of the smaller hot spot in the center of a Mono, so a DD with about 20% or so less depth would be a much better choice to use because it has full scanning width, a DD is more stable-quieter so a person can listen for good very faint gold signals amoungst ground noise better than a Mono better than ever now with a 4500(and also new DD's are coming out soon) as you said, and the DD's full scanning width paint brush center line is also hotter(more sensitive) than a Mono's edges to about 5" or so in depth, no matter what size DD(as compared to the same size Mono I think) according to Steve Gholson, then after about 5" or so a Mono gets a bit hotter. BUT as Jonathan P. pointed out some time ago a Mono can be swung faster than a DD is the nature of the coils windings. As this faster more rapid Mono sweep speed makes up for its lack of coverage(more overlapping) of a Mono. This puts a new light on things. Weigh this all out!
Also Jonathan P. said in Sharp Timings a DD can get about 20% more depth(than non Sharp Timings I think) when used on a 4500, if I understood and heard him correctly?
AND both CoilTek and NuggetFinder are coming out with a new line of DD coils.
So what does this all mean? A DD used on a 4500 may not be a bad choice after all and a very good choice BUT a Mono can be swung faster, as DD's have to be swung slower. How much slower or faster, I do not know as Jonathan P. did not say?
Hope this adds to your food for thought!

4000 & 4500 COIL CHOICE ?
Hi everyone,I have been a mono user now for 14 years, started with sd2100 then gp3000 then 35 and now 45.I have used DD coils from time to time when the ground has been too hard to work with. One thing I have noticed is that since the GP series and up there has been a huge lift in the capabilities of DD coilsto the point that they still are slightly short of the mark compared to the depth of a mono at its point but I have to agree with the views here that there is not much difference any more.I have seen a sub point one nugget if you would call it a nugget picked up at 1 inch with a 17 by 11 coiltec elliptical coil which I was impressed cos DD coils never used to be able to see such small gold. When they bring out a DD coil as light as NF 17" eliptical I may buy one because you can get so much extra from the 4000 and 4500 in regards to output with the different settings which I feel there would be no difference in the depth,I would just have to get used to the different audio sound a DD makes .It is a lot more narrow than the mono.
This is a great forum you have here so all keep up the good work and happy hunting.
