To check the battery voltage with a multimeter should you place the probes in Pin 1 and Pin 4 as I have used Pin 1 and Pin 2 ?

Yes you would measure pins 1 and 4, but you will probably get about the same result through pin 2 anyway.

Hmmm, I just measured almost 8 volts on one pin and 7.2 on the other.
There seems to be two active positives and one earth.
I just dismantled the battery and can see a Red, a Blue and a Black wire, all clearly going to the circuit board to their own destinations.
