Minelab Detector Warranty Empty Minelab Detector Warranty

G'day all, I am new to this forum and hobby, so please bear with me and if I make any mistakes apologies in advance.
Anyway I was interested in purchasing a second hand Minelab detector via EBay and I asked the seller about the warranty. The seller told me it is still under warranty and all I had to do is fill in the warranty card and post it onto Minelab.
I phoned Minelab's excellent customer service and was given the following information both verbally and via email:

"· All Minelab detectors sold new prior to 1st July 2011 have non-transferrable warranty. IE: If resold to a second owner the warranty is expired (other than those warranties that are inherent by state & federal law)

· All New Minelab detectors sold through an Authorised Minelab Dealer, after 1st July 2011 will have transferable warranty for whatever remaining time is still unused of the Minelab warranty, subject to two conditions.

o (a) The detector has to be resold within the same country that it was originally sold. So if the detector were originally sold overseas and then came to Australia and were resold as a second hand unit, it would not have transferable warranty. If it were originally sold in Australia & then resold as a second hand detector in Australia, then it will have transferable warranty.

o (b) That the original sale as a new detector were made through a Minelab Authorised Dealer. If a person bought a ‘supposed’ new detector on e-bay or through the newspaper or down the pub from an unauthorized person, then that detector will not carry a transferable warranty if it were resold again."

Good information for anyone considering a purchase of a second hand Minelab detector that is still under warranty.

dragon it is probably best to stay well clear of gpx 5000's on ebay. there are so many dodgy sales going on there and really for the few hundred $$ u save you wouldn't dare trust it. even a 5000 2nd hand isn't worth the effort (yet). if this is the machine you have chosen to buy, then i highly recommend you buy new.

Dragon,

You are best to go to your closest Minelab dealer.

Buy a new machine.

Get to know the dealer, build up a good repoir. Obtain the best deal you can, get a few extras thrown in, assistence with settings etc, minelab training day. etc.

This way you will get the latest 5000, have your full warranty. Then go out and find 5 ozs of the good stuff and you have paid for your detector.

Pretty simple really.

Evening all,
Acan, Goldbait, I am inclined to agree with you both regarding a new purchase. As you both guessed, it was second hand 5000 which I was looking at. I have hired the old SD2100 from a local company in Mitcham, Victoria years ago and was impressed with the support and knowledge that was on offer from a retailer that has been in the game for many years. At the end of the day nobody can guarantee a purchase on EBay would be without its problems and the last thing any of us wants is to be out in the field with a $6000+ piece of equipment that does not function properly and with no support for the consumer. This is an education for me and weighing up the pro's and con's of a 2nd hand purchase, your comments have helped me galvanise my decision on this subject and I must thank you.
Digging Diver, best of luck with your future purchase and prospecting and I hope it is all smooth sailing for you.

Cheers,

Dragon.

Dragon,I have over 3000 feedbacks on Ebay but would not buy a 5000 from Ebay. Sure you may save up to $500 at the most but some that are on there have been imported from America so warranty not valid here,if you look at their feedback you will see sometimes that they have got them from America and then sell them here, also biggest fear is Chinese fakes, they are about which most would not know if its fake or not including myself until you tested it in the field and then its too late. Also don't buy off anyone on Ebay, Gumtree and other sites who have in bold letters email me before bidding. These fraudsters could be anywhere in the world and offer you the item at a bargain price tell you its safe as they don't get money straight away as Ebay holds it until you are completely satisfied and get you to pay by Western Union. Ebay does not hold money at all and Western Union payments are not traceable. Hate to think how many have lost their hard earned cash this way but keep silent due to embarrasement. Some will hijack an Ebay site by sending the account holder an email telling them its a security check and to advise email address and password or they will have their account struck out, some newcomers panic and supply these details. I have lost count the number of times over the years that i have had such spam emails purporting to be from Ebay or Paypal. They then list items under your user name and if you are an infrequent user you would not know that the item is listed. As others have suggested buy from a Minelab dealer within Australia and sleep at night knowing you have the right machine with a Warranty. regards JMP333

Hi JMP333,
I agree with you, good points made and thank you for the feedback. I am sold on not using EBay for a purchase such as this.

Regards,

Ben
