Re: how much depth 18" Nugget Finder
I have always found round coils give a better response to medium and large targets at a greater depth compared to their equivalent size ellipticals.
I ran a Coiltek 18" round over a 20 gram target at 14" inches and picked up a signal were the 18x12 Coiltek elliptical couldnt pick up anything.
Did the same test with a N/F 16" and 18" round on the same target and both gave a responses with the 18" being slightly better.
As to how much depth difference there is between the two you've mentioned, really impossible to answer as there is too many factors involved but if you are after more outright depth my money would be with the round.

Re: how much depth 18" Nugget Finder
thanks TheGoldenChild they both have there good points as the Elliptical is greater for pinpointing but the AV round have better depth. i wasn't sure how much more depth the AV round had over the Elliptical.

How much better round v ellip?
Hi Stoppsy
I was told by Jack Lange that a 24 x12 NF has the same depth capability as a 16" NF round coil but obviously has much better ground coverage & pinpointing.
That being said I use a 20" NF mono mostly on my SD2200d & don't have much problem pin pointing.
Pin pointing!!!! Stoppsy can I make a suggestion ? after watching your vids it looks like you could pinpoint a little better, I devide my spoil piles into half then quarters to isolate the section of spoil that holds the target, as I use a large coil I use the toe of the coil then move it forward to where I think the target is I also check it 90 deg when it's in the pile, not critisising just trying to help.
You sure are on a roll with your finds & keep the vids coming, the big one must be just around the corner.
cheers

stoppsy go into "bigW" or somewhere like that and get a kids sand shovel, you know the little ones that kids play with on the beach etc, its all we use and there only about 2 bucks, see the one that I'm using in my "You Tube" vids, the link is below my sign off.

Het Stoppsy, the big junk shop across from Coiltek in Maryborough sells scoops...in fact they sell everything.
Re: how much depth 18" Nugget Finder
G'day Stoppsy.
Jack Lang is pretty much spot on in saying that the 24x12 NF, has the equivalent depth of the 16 inch round NF.As for your initial question the 18 inch NF AV round (all other variables being equal) has approximately 20% greater depth capability on a 1oz+ slug of gold, compared to the 17x11NF or the 18x12 Gold stalker. The 17x11NF would be equivalent to a NF13 inch round mono if they ever happen to make them that size.

I have used a plastic garden trowel like the one in this link have even dug up nugget in WA with them.
They are available in Big W or K-Marts for a few $

Hey Lee,
How do you find the 2200 runs with the larger mono coil on and have you tried it with an 18"+ mono coiltek coil.

Hi Chris
If I thought it was a bit iffy I wouldn't run with it, I'm happy with how it run's, sure it get's a bit noisy occasionally but ground ballancing often help's & I noticed last year when working a gully things were getting a bit noisey & ground balance wouldn't sort it so I tried re-tuning it & this sorted it out, so now I re-tune & re- balance when things get noisey.
I haven't tried any coiltek coils.
cheers

Re: how much depth 18" Nugget Finder
G;day guys, I have been told that the general rule of thumb of comparing an eliptical coil to a round coil is to add the two measurments of the eliptical coil together & then divide by 2. So a 24" X 12" becomes 12 + 24 = 36 divided by 2 = 18 or in the case of the 17" X 11". 17+11=28 divided by 2 = 14. Pretty close any way.
Happy hunting

G'day Kiwijw.
That law applies in theory only.Get a 5 gram nugget or a 5 cent coin.Bury them to the point where they're barley audible to the 17x11 and you'll find that the 14 round mono comes up trumps, even better on an air test.

interesting ,what i always would have thought would be that the smaller coil would have been a tighter field and in fact given a louder response to that target .
On my understanding now using a 16 inch round in a recent area i was about to reduce the coil size to attain a better response from deeper and as deep signals as i found this nugget .
Also i began to believe that a smaller coil could unmask hidden signals in noisy ground ...hmmm it confuses me wondering all the time though lol
