Bankers Hill - Toowoomba
I received this message from Lucky 1. Perhaps one of the members can help him
hi jefgold
I spotted your thread on "around brisbane and gympie"(jan 2. 2010) noticed that you said that bankers hill was or is around toowoomba. I've tried to pull it up on the net but haven't had any luck. I live in toowoomba and thought it may be a good spot for a bit of a beep. Hoping you can throw a bit more light on the subject for me or point me in the right direction for some more info about the area.
Kindest regards lucky 1

Re: Bankers Hill - Toowoomba
I am confused as to who wrote this post? Jefgold or Lucky 1???
Interested as I live near Toowoomba and never heard of Bankers Hill, only Bunkers Hill at Westbrook. Hannahs owned the property and I had permission to fly my Radio Controlled gliders off it years ago.

Hi panther
I wrote it (lucky 1) I was reading a thread dated 2nd jan 2010. by jefgold under "gold around brisbane and gympie" that mentioned a place called bankers hill near toowoomba. I searched it on the net but only came up with bunkers hill. Thought I sent a private mail to jefgold to see if he could shed some light on it for me.Not real good with pc's looks like I just posted it instead.

Re: Bankers Hill - Toowoomba
Hi Lucky, I can have a look in Gold and Ghosts but I haven't seen Bankers Hill before. I know gold was found around Murphys Creek, Helidon and Highfields but have never found any suitable area for detecting there. In fact there is another mine about 2 klm line of sight from my place near Grantham. I have been told I can check it out sometime. A neighbour claims they picked up a small nugget lying on the ground but then lost it later on. mmmm

Hi Panther.
Looked at the thread re Lucky trying to find Bankers Hill. I myself in South East Qld, Gold Coast. Never heard of it. Seems like a great name, bankers on the hill collecting the gold.
I also noticed that you are based at Grantham.
I hope you were all OK with the floods.
The vision was terrible.
All the best. Acan

hi panther
Little knowledge big danger... All i did was push a button here, push a button there and bammmmmm i stole some ones ID ......lol
Thanks for the info but i'd be staying away from murphys creek, we go down once a fortnight for bowen, they are still cleaning up from the floods. don't want to look like i'm out to find some ones gear.
Have heard that there has been some colour some where around ravensborne and crowsnest back in the days but havn't been able to find out anything concrete or if it was nuggets.

Re: Bankers Hill - Toowoomba
Has been mispelled from Bunker's Hill, Westbrook, Toowoomba, Queensland.
Old newspaper (Barrier Miner, NSW) Wednesday 28th December 1932, page 2
[i]Brisbane - Wednesday - Promising finds of gold ore are reported from Bunker's Hill, an old prospecting field 35 miles from Toowoomba, Queensland.
http://tiny.cc/on00j
Even the old papers report is in error as to the distance from Toowoomba.
Still a primary school there

Re: Bankers Hill - Toowoomba
In Gold and Ghosts Page 71, it lists the Ravensbourne Diggings at Bunkers Hill, 6.5 klm north-east of Ravensbourne. It was found in the 1930s.
The gold occurs sporadically , in rich pockets and is entirely without quartz. That's interesting. Sounds like 5000 country.
There is a map showing Bunkers Hill location on page 72. G&G Vol. 3.

Re: Bankers Hill - Toowoomba
G&G are out of production and are quite expensive 2nd hand. You could try ebay but expect to pay anything from $300 - $500 I think mine (Vol3 Q'land) cost me around $60 new many years ago.
They are not going to find gold for you but are loaded with locations and the history and type of gold found. ie nuggety, fine, reef etc
and the amount won from mines etc. Trouble is, when you start reading them, you get yourself wound up and rearing to go...

Re: Bankers Hill - Toowoomba
Yes shelby, apparently there were a lot of volumes got 'lost' or 'stolen' whilst on loan and the borrower only had to pay a token value compared to the value of the book. It seems that temptation was a bit much for some poor souls and many books finished up on ebay from what I have been told.
You are lucky the library even had a copy at all.
Have you found any more nuggets on your property yet? (I think it was you that found one?)

Re: Bankers Hill - Toowoomba
Morning All-
The grid co ordinates that geoff_junk listed is a Bunkers Hill, but too far up froim Toowoomba. Closer to Townsville.
There must be another Bunkers Hill, or it does not exist near Toowoomba.
Re Gold and Ghosts.
The Gold Coast Libary has the full 4 voilume set.
I went to see them last year and they are in archives section upstairs. They are in a glass cabinet and you are allowed to take them out one at a time and read them on a table in front of the archive librarian. You cannot take them out of the room.
One plus though is that were you sit, a copier is next to you and she said I was allowed to copy a few pages.
They are available at times for purchase and Yes they are going for BIG dollars.
I finally bit the bullet this week and purchased Volume 1 and 2. Now looking out for Vol 3 and 4 for the right price.
As I would like these for a reference source. I know a lot of the places have been flooged to death, as detectors change new nuggets are being found and some areas are remote and do not have the easy access. So my 4wd will get in. Or quad bike for deeper locations after base camp set up.
With my long term plans to detect for far longer periods and travel over the next few years, a couple of good nuggets will cover the cost.
They are also a good read.
Hope you all have a great weekend and find heaps. Acan

Re: Bankers Hill - Toowoomba
Hi Acan,
The Bunkers Hill you are interested in is 6.5K's North East of Ravensbourne, off the Esk-Hampton Road. An approximate area to start looking for diggings might be 27° 17' 57" S, 152° 15' 27" E - that should put you in the general area at least. Be aware the area appears to be inside State Forest, in which case prospecting prohibited
Cheers, Andy

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the message. I personally am not going there. A memeber further up the message was asking for directions and some were given, but I thought they were wrong.

Gold Mine
Whoever heads out there try asking the local property owners about the area they might be able to lead you to diggings around the area, I find once you get talking to them they reveal a lot and are always helpful.

Re: Bankers Hill - Toowoomba
No its not dont get caught Queensland is one of the most locked up states in Australia, you are only allowed to prospect in GPAs outlined by the Queensland Gov or if you get permission private land. There is no metal detecting or prospecting allowed in state forests.
