What size coil for cleaning up a patch
Small Nugget Coils
Ok. i'm after a small coil for the small stuff.
The 3 i have narrowed the stuff down to is.
10" eliptical mono
6" round
8" round
I'm detecing in somewhat noisey ground to extremely nosey ground.
which will give me the best depth and sensativity.
Detector is a GP extreme.

Re: Small Nugget Coils
G'day Goldbait.
Goldbait,I can't recommend any of the mono coils you've narrowed it down to.I mean your talking small monos on a GP Extreme on noisy or extremely noisy ground. As a matter of fact the smaller mono you go the more sensitive the coil will be on tiny gold, but it will also increase the sensitivity to ground noise and hot rocks as well. If it where on a GPX series machine, different ball game. You'll find that by going to a 10x5 Commander or Coiltek DD,should more than suffice,on the tiny stuff.
Cheers kon61.

Re: Small Nugget Coils
on that note kon. My 11" DD is a lot more noisy than my 18" DD on extremely noisy ground.
On the same ground my 14x9 mono runs sweet.

Re: Small Nugget Coils
Goldbait,If thats the case,i too will recommend the 8 inch Commander mono, although,I'm a stunned mullet, as to how a mono coil can run smoother and quieter over hot ground than that of a DD of similar size.

Re: Small Nugget Coils

Hi Goldbait
I have just purchased a 8 inch Commander mono round coil also, after seeing the great results of others in the field, and also helpful forum members glowing reports.I have found 0.1 and 0.2 gram nuggets on its first and second time use. There are other fine small coils out there, but this coil lives up to its well deserved reputation. It makes you feel that you will not walk away from any worthwhile gold targets.

good to see the 8" doing well for you Eureka Dreams. i have found most off my gold with my 8" the smallest bit .07 gram yesterday. it might be small but it counts to the collection off the findings at the end off the day.

Small nugget coils
Thanks Stoppsy,i`ve started to find gold more regularly now after going through a lean patch but now with trading up to a 4500 and learning to also drive it better, and having gone through a selection of coils until i`ve found what works for me.I am a member of two forums and with the knowledge that i have picked up online from members, and with them in the field is so generous and priceless..
Having the best gear that you can afford, and constantly learning from others and more importantly testing that knowledge in the gold fields, and seeking to improve on your technique brings results.....
OK back to that little 8 inch Commander you will not go wrong having it cover your small gold findings, and i`ve heard it loves a bigger bit too
PS..BTW i went to Creswick yesterday with Fire1aus,and i scored a nice flat 2.3 gram nugget found with my 18x12 GS which is proving to be a great coil for me also IMO.
Cheers Eureka Dreams
Love that Gold

Re: Small Nugget Coils
Hi guys, The smallest I have found with my GP 3000 was using the 10" X 5" coiltek joey mono is .05. That is the smallest bit of gold I have found. I have used the coiltek 6" mono & the minelab 8"commander mono as well but that .05 piece is the smallest with the joey mono. I am lucky that our ground over here in NZ is pretty quiet & I dont need to use a DD. Searching in sensitive & deep mode. I love that 10" X 5" mono. Mind you ....I am also very fond of the nuggetfinder 12" X 7" mono as well. Maybe not as smaller gold as .05 but very good all rounder coil.

i have the 8" coil and have used the 10x5 coil, the 10x5 coil will get you in tight spots where the 8" coil will not.

Uncle Bob. how do they compare on mineralised ground. do they both go about the same depth.
which would u go out of the 2.

Go for the 10" X 5". You wont be dissapointed. I havnt used the 8" or 6" for ages. As has been said you will get into much tighter spots with the 10" X 5".

how mineralised is your soil over there pete. or do they work just about anywhere.
Would they behave similarly to the 8" round mono.

Re: Small Nugget Coils

Very similar surface areas so they see the same amount of ground/mineralisation,
if i can line up a lend would ya be interested.
you pay the post etc and it could be done, i think i got a mate near you he wouldnt mind
doin it, he's a lover of that coil too and think he got 3 also like me.
Either way at roughly $200 bucks for either 8" or 10"x5" coil ya cant lose.
you will "SNIFF" up the gold so quick to pay for it + more, real quick.
Dont let $$$$ stand between you and gold, that is called a false economy
and some other bloke will beat ya to it before you know it.

Re: Small Nugget Coils
Good on you Pete, well said. I just love my little joey & know that if I had to chose knowing what I know having used all the small coils it would be my pick of the bunch. But then I am talking mono's not DD's. I have pulled gold off areas that have been trashed by all the minelab PI detectors including the 4000 & 4500 with my 3000 & this great little coil. Mostly old sluiced areas that have been washed down to bed rock. This coil just sniffs out the small gold & of course if there is a bigger bit it will get that too but those piecea have been cleaned up. I cant speak highly enough of the 10" X 5" coil. Mine is the coiltek If I bought another I would go for the minelab commander version which is wound with litz wire same as the nugget finder coils & I believe they hold the edge in performence over the others.
A no brainer I think.
Good luck which ever way you go.

Re: Small Nugget Coils
Gday
I have used the same minelab 8" mono for quite a few years now, originally it came with my first sd2100, its the supergoldsearch one not the commander one, and was an excellent coil on the gp extreme, paying for itself many many times over, I even still use it on the 4500 and its not only very sensitive but it has amazing depth for its size.
I have also used the coiltek 10" eliptical mono and found it ok but always went back to the 8" mono, its what you are used to I guess and your favorite coil is of course the one you have found the most gold with, with it being all completely relevant to the amount of time you use that particular coil.
To my way of thinking if I was going to use a 10" eliptical coil I would just use the commander 11" round mono, better coverage and more depth, but any time I need something to really sniff out a spot that may be rocky or covered with spinifex or whatever the 8" mono is on.
Most of these small type coils will do the job for you so I wouldnt be too concerned about it and splitting hairs over the decision of which one to get, once you have your new coil on the ground and you start to get gold with it you will simply build up confidence in it, the more you use it and the more gold you get with it the more of a favorite it will become.
cheers

Re: Small Nugget Coils
Yer, Horses for coursers, I love the minelab commander 11" mono too for open shallow ground but the 10 x 5 gets into tight spots & between tussocks & rocks & under & around bushs & is great for turning on edge & draging backwards through crevices. I have snaged many a piece doing that. I reckon get both. They will both pay for themsevles.

Re: Small Nugget Coils
Its a good thing, there will be those who just have to have one, and while ever they are using them the bigger gold is safe.
Re: Small Nugget Coils
14x9,12x7,and now 8x6? By golly gents,I can understand maneuverability through tight spots, but we're also one step closer to surpassing that of the term called "Fly sh*t".....
