"Tennis Elbow" - Prospecting Soreness
Hi everyone,
I`m just a new member to the forum however I have been following members posts for some weeks and have found them to be very informative, interesting and entertaining. I have only been chasing the yellow stuff for a relatively short time and I need all the good advice I can get so thanks to everyone who share there knowledge and experience.
My wife and I had a Caravaning holiday in WA this winter and I managed to have a two week stint in the goldfields, not much success but I loved every minute. Only problem is that I came back with a very sore elbow/arm and the Doc has diagnosed Tennis Elbow. After 12 weeks, anti-inflammatories, Cortisone injections, Accupuncture and exercises its still with me. Anyone out there that may have experienced the same thing and has had any success with a remedy. Thanks.

Get yourself some ELMORE OIL it's a Roll On but still rub it in anyway.Made in Australia and it works. Might have to use it a couple of days.
try your local chemist. Anything that will kill my back pain will kill any muscle pain

Hi Macrob
1 Is your machine balanced.Hold it by the Bundgee.the weight bias should be towards the coil.If your machine balances at 5 o clock mark it should be right.Adjust the knuckle if it doesnt.
2You might have an injury that will reoccur.A hipstick (See Jonathan Porter Website)can solve some of these problems.Weight is transfered from the upperbody to your belt.
Hope some of this info helps
Cheers Dig

G'day Macrob, welcome. Firstly what do you do for a job, it could be because of your work and not caused from detecting. My friend has tennis elbow and has tried a lot of things and I think you have to learn to live with it once you have it. One thing that he uses is a elbow warmer, the ones from the chemists and some things that you do agravate it so a hipstick would help for that a lot. At the end of the day you need to manage it the best you can and that includes when going to bed as well.

Thanks Adrian SS, Dig and uncle Bob. I have tried the Elmore Oil without any relief. Dig I will certainly test the balancing, its logical that something as simple as that could be causing the ongoing problem.
Uncle Bob I do as little as possible now-retired, so it would be the detecting thats causing the agro. Thanks again.

G'day , the medical industry will try to sell you anything , including surgery , and they will say it should be fine in 12 to 18 months ....I say do NOTHING and it will fix itself in 12 to 18 months ...I've had it in both arms and it is a common problem with us golfers .It gets to the stage where you can't lift anything for a while but tends to get better with time and all of a sudden you don,t notice anything ..Golfers elbow/Tennis elbow , just another name for tendonitis >>>>>..cheers.....

Same with me - I visited an Orthopedic Surgeon he said that it will heal itself over time..
He was right it took about 5 months.

Developed the same thing in my left arm (pick arm) back in July this year. I put up with it until about 6 weeks ago when I saw a Doc & he prescribed anti-inflamatories & physio. I took the anti-inflamatories for 2 weeks until I started to react to them (they helped a little, but not a lot).
I then went to a physiotherapist who was very knowledgeable about the condition & started various treatments which has improved it quite a bit in a fairly short time. The treatments are ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation & massage of the area (boy that hurts ). I also have to do a number of resistance exercises & wear a compressive bandage around the area when I'm working at all.
In his opinion it should be ok in about 6months as long as I keep up the exercises & don't overwork it with repeatative heavy work. I will also have to learn to use both arms to dig my holes in future
My advice would be to get a referral to a good physio & let him at it. It might only need 3 or 4 visits to get things under control where you can then look after yourself.
Cheers, Andy

Re: "Tennis Elbow" - Prospecting Soreness
Suprised to hear that the elmore oil didn't have any affect, I agree with the other comments, when I had tendonitis it cleared up of its own accord after about 4 months. The body is a very adaptable bit of work.
I broke an ankle once and opted not to go to a doctor, I did not want to be slowed up with a cast, it was a mess, all blue and green and red and swollen to so much that it was hanging over my boot tops and bloody excruciatingly painfull for a couple of weeks and I walked on it without crutches but without puting much weight on it. After 7 weeks I could walk on it normally. That was back in 76, Today it is just a bit stiff compared to the other ankle but she works just fine. About 5 years ago I had an X Ray of the ankle for another reason and the doc asked when did I brake my ankle and I said a few years back and then he said that it had been reset very well, and that the doctor who set it did a very good job and I said yes he is the best doctor I know. I believe very strongly in the old saying "Body heal Thyself".
There are some things that can be a bit of a problem but, Like if someone chops yer head off. Yeah that might take a bit longer than 7 weeks
Cheers,
Adrian SS

Re: "Tennis Elbow" - Prospecting Soreness
Have you tried taking Glucosamone tablets? they work for me . I developed sore elbow joints after taking up a part time cleaning job to help pay a few bills in semi retirement (Previously I spent 29yrs at a desk job). Since taking them I have pain free elbow joints.

Re: "Tennis Elbow" - Prospecting Soreness
As a number of other posters have suggested,
I would strongly suggest trying a Hipstick.
I have used one for over four years and I am an advocate for it's use.
It has almost completely eliminated my arm/back/shoulder pain
and I can detect for far longer time periods than I ever could without it.
It works well with large or small coils, I never take it off.
fwiw,

Hi MacRob
The trick is to go to a SPORTS physio.
Had a family memeber suffer from tennis elbow for years, and sports physio solved it in 3 visits.

Re: "Tennis Elbow" - Prospecting Soreness
Been there, done that MacRob. Couldn't even hold onto a glass with that hand. Cortisone and a sling and 2 weeks off work. The good thing is my Doctor said that once you get over TE you likely will not get it again. 25 years later I have never had it again and I detect heaps.

Re: "Tennis Elbow" - Prospecting Soreness
Good Day All.
I had a Tennis elbow about 12 years ago & since I do heavy work( I build & maintain railway tracks) I spent months at a physio to no avail this was agony so they sent me to a specialist & he gave me a quarterzone needle & I have had no pain since.
Cheers Greg

I have often had tennis elbow from tennis. However, using a hipstick I have never had a problem with detecting - they make it effortless.
