How much HF do Mag Cleaners need to have to clean gold?
Hi all,
I'm looking at buying some aluminium mag cleaner to clean up some of my not so nice looking gold...
There are two type that I'm looking at ( I don't think Ali Brite is sold here in NZ)
On the first one, the guy selling it says that the label reads "hydrofluoric acid at 100grams per litre and phosphoric acid at 150grams per litre" And the second guy says " Hydrofluoric acid 43 mls per litre, Phosphoric acid 300 grams per litre..
Which do you think would be the best for cleaning gold?
Any advice would be very great
Cheers

Re: How much HF do Mag Cleaners need to have to clean gold?
Hi GT, just checked my bottle and it says 9.8g per litre which is way less than yours it seems and works fine for me.
So which ever you choose will no doubt do the job fine. I'd go for which ever is cheapest.
cheers!

goldtimer hi
i don`t know what those products are but 100 grams per litre is a 10% mix of hydrofluric. hydrofluric is lethal. be very careful handling it

Hi mintcar, Thanks for that. I didn't know that it was sold here. I'll have to get some.
Phoenix: I think I'll leave that other stronger stuff. It's $60 for 4 litres, I'd never get around to using 4 litres, and it looks like pretty toxic stuff..... Wouldn't want to get any on your skin
Cheers for the help

Are you trying to remove quartz or rock/ironstone?
Alibrite is for quartz. Hydrochloric acid for ironstone.
