Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS
Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS taken from Melbourne at ~5am Monday 23rd September local time (UTC +10).
There's been much talk and speculation that this will be one of the brightest comets in recent years, some say it will likely be visible to the naked eye. It's been a challenge with the constant cloud cover, fortunate to have a clear sky this morning just as dawn approached.
Image 1: Single 10sec frame using a refractor telescope with focal length 658mm
Image 2: Timelapse taken with Nikon DSLR @200mm f/5.6 (you may want to increase default resolution setting to 720p at least)
Distance from the sun 0.413 AU (61.851M km)
Distance from earth 1.117 AU (167.152M km)
Light time: 9min 17.6sec
Speed: 65.512 km/s (235,843 km/hr)
Elevation: 6.2 degrees

Nice shot.
What Alt Az was the comet at that time.
Been too cloudy here in Canberra. and being surrounded by trees and hills does not help much.

Re: Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS
Thanks Adrian. Alt/Az coordinates were +93d/6d13m (almost due east and ~6 degrees above the horizon). Rises ~4.30am and dims with rising sun shortly after.
It's been consistently cloudy here in Melbourne also however I was very lucky to have a clear start to the day on Monday. Tue/Wed were cloudy again, will take another look tomorrow morning (Thu) although forecast predicts clouds yet again. The comet is expected to pass perihelion at a distance of 0.39 AU this Friday (27th Sept), when it could become visible to the naked eye. At this stage the weather forecast in terms of cloud cover is looking good, fingers crossed...
Tony.

Re: Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS
Thanks for that info.
Still cloudy cold and wet here for the next couple of days but I might get lucky.
This comet is tipped to light up a bit over the next few days or so, but then these beasts are notoriously unpredictable

Re: Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS
have not had a cloud free day since the 23Sep so no chance of spotting the comet from my back yard.
The cloud cover has meant that my solar hot water has been just luke warm so had to revert to coal fire electricity for the past 5 days.......Solar and wind just does not cut it; as for batteries , well they will make a great fire one day.
