Came across a few of these recently: small discrete bits of gold embedded within calcrete matrices (gold is 98% pure based on the surrounding finds). Interesting from a geological perspective.

I think most people look out for indicators (such as ironstone, quartz etc) when trying to find or follow a lead – particularly when they are detecting. However, calcrete can also be a good agent as both Au and Ca potentially accumulate in the same part of the soil.

Also found (with GPZ). Crystalline gold on a quartz matrix background. Had to very carefully chip it off a rather deep quartz reef.
