Fools Gold with Gold and Other Sulphides
Gold on Quartz with Arsenopyrite (arsenic sulphide) on a slate base
Pyrite with gold, pyrite (iron sulphide) is hard and brittle, decomposes to red rust on exposure to the elements
Gold with Galena (lead sulphide), usually contains some silver, sulphide mineralisation is a good indication of reef gold.
Chalcopyrite (copper Iron Sulphide) due to the copper looks more like gold, another fools gold, is hard and brittle

Re: Fools Gold with Gold and Other Sulphides
Mineral collectors will pay a premium for good quality combination specimens showing gold with other minerals or gold with quartz crystals, so don't throw them in the dolly pot.

Re: Fools Gold with Gold and Other Sulphides
GOLD ON PINK GRANITE
lOOKS LIKE GOLD BUT IS CHALCOPYRITE ON CALCITE
CHALCOPYRITE AGAIN WITH MAGNETITE CRYSTALS
ELECTRUM (AMALGAM OF GOLD AND SILVER)
ALLUVIAL PLATINUM (NSW)
PLATINUM
SILVER COPPER HALF BREED
STREAM TIN (CASSITERITE)
UNKNOWN NUGGET, found this in the bush in the Ballarat area, it is not gold, will need specialty chemicals to test it.
Regarding the other specimens I did not take the photos as my camera has poor depth of field with macro lens,
in other words not all of the specimens would be in focus.
As you can see gold can be found in all sorts of material.
enjoy
cheers Tezz

Re: Fools Gold with Gold and Other Sulphides
Really interesting, thanks guys just goes to show how maybe the surface indicators can vary so much and not to rely on just looking for the old "Salt and Pepper"
