Off Topic Coronavirus
So a new strain of the coronavirus from China has arrived on our doorsteps and it is killing people around the world.
Seems this new strain was known about over a month ago before we were informed about it.
China is closing down travel between some of their cities to try and stop the spread of the virus.
I think that China is not all that fussed about whether the virus spreads to international countries, they just want to stop it spreading throughout China because the potential to decimate the tight packed population is high. If they were really concerned about the rest of the world they would stop all travel in and out of China.

nothing wrong with a bit of internal antiseptic boobook
AS I've stated in the past Adrian, rabbits in a paddock [over population],and have said that the biggest threat to humanity is the microbe.
On that note time for some more internal antiseptic [nice cold IPA]

Re: Off Topic Coronavirus
This Coronavirus originated in the meat markets of china, filthy conditions, with live animals as well. Why this is allowed is beyond me. That last bad virus, SARS? originated from the same meat markets yrs ago.

Re: Off Topic Coronavirus
I don't think your source has it right? Coronaviruses in various strains have been around for a long time i.e. the Common Cold.Travelergold wrote:We have heard from what i consider a good source that china had bought in the swine flu to develop antivirus for and the stuff they were developing escaped and they are calling it corona virus as that was the spot where swine flu was first discovered.
The current strain (named 2019-nCoV) is a strain that has caused symptoms worse than the normal coronaviruses. There have been other past strains of it i.e. SARS-CoV & MERS-CoV that caused worse than normal symptoms too.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) wrote:Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause respiratory illnesses such as the common cold. Most people get infected with coronaviruses at one point in their lives, but symptoms are typically mild to moderate. In some cases, the viruses can cause lower-respiratory tract illnesses such as pneumonia and bronchitis.
The ease of spread - animal to animal, animal to human & human to human seems to be the biggest concern.CDC wrote:Early on, many of the patients in the outbreak of respiratory illness caused by 2019-nCov in Wuhan, China had some link to a large seafood and live animal market, suggesting animal-to-person spread. Later, a growing number of patients reportedly did not have exposure to animal markets, indicating person-to-person spread.
Hopefully the Australian Scientists working on a vaccine have a positive breakthrough soon.

Which ever way you look at it fellas, lets just hope the world finds a way to eradicate this new strain of virus ASAP.
Adrian trust me when I say China does care for there own people, as well as the rest of the worlds, for they have so much more to lose than just population wise.
Cheers Kon.

I wonder why this joint hasn't rated a mention in the news, given its location.
Wuhan Institute of Virology
http://english.whiov.cas.cn/Home2016/
Wuhan Institute of Virology mission targeting for population health, agriculture and sustainable development strategies and public safety needs of the country, relying on high-level biosafety laboratory cluster platform, focusing on virology, Agricultural and Environmental Microbiology and emerging biotechnology basic and applied basic research and other aspects.
A search for "corona" on the site reveals they have been experimenting with the corona virus for a few years.

Re: Off Topic Coronavirus
It has been raised several times in online posts, but I guess that people are a bit afraid to come out and openly say, that this bug may have escaped from their fiddling with the bug.
Having said that a couple of days ago a Melbourne lab announced that they had successfully cloned/duplicated the virus in the lab (which I thought wouldn't have been too difficult), but again, if suitable procedures aren't in place it could potentially mutate and get out of controlled area.

Chinese value on human and other animal life is close enough to be the lowest on the planet.
They have a lot to loose I agree and they are prepared to loose it if it gains them what they want.

Re: Off Topic Coronavirus
Seems to me that these viruses are much more clever than we are.
They continue to evolve, we have stopped evolving. Viruses use some truly remarkable means of reproduction that are far superior to the human repro process.
A virus requires living animal tissue to survive. What came first, the animal or the virus? If the animal came first then what caused a virus to evolve into an existence that required animal tissue to survive? Viruses have been around a long time as we have but we have not evolved a natural defence against them.
At what point in the evolution of a virus did it require living animal tissue to reproduce and survive.
A virus evolves and survives by killing the very thing that it needs to survive...Sort of a bit like us aye?
Do humans cause a virus to evolve when we have no natural defence against them. Our immune systems cannot handle a virus infection therefore if we are not a threat to the virus then it has no need to evolve.
Do other animals become immune to virus infection and if so, why not humans?

What about a cancer cell?
Cancer cells need to be connected into a blood supply to survive and reproduce. Are they part of our natural body system gone rogue or is a cancer cell a separate entity.
What keeps a cancer cell alive while it is wandering around in our blood stream looking for a place to attach itself.

This virus sounds more like a manufacture virus from a virology complex.
The sudden and huge response from china to build a completly new hospital for the containment and treatment of people effected by the virus sounds a lot like they new in advance how dangerous it was going to be if it ever got loose in the environment.

Re: Off Topic Coronavirus
Good for the virus, yes. Good for the ones susceptible to it, no. As the saying goes "every dog has its day" so do virus's which lay dormant awaiting for the right moment to kick in & spread.
One thing I can only wonder though, is that if these constant new strain of virus's, are deliberately engineered/introduced by man, onto the populations of the world, infecting many, so that a cure is then made available to man for a profit. Big bucks are to be made in the pharmaceutical game these days, for anything sold over the counter without prescription, is not a cure, but designed for one to come back & buy more
The threat of biological warfare out there today, is far greater than than the threat of nuclear war.
Cheers Kon.

Well I am not so sure of that.
There are numerous times in the bible when God has intended to do something and mere mortals have convinced him he is making a mistake.
That does not sound like an all powerful all knowing God.
Are these people who are correcting God smarter and better informed than he?....

.. .. all these questions Adrian ,you musta driven ya parents mad when ya were a kid .. .. most people ive been talking too about it are rather bla - zay about it really , I think the media blow these things outa proportion too ,as for how it started ive read about 4 different accounts as to how it got started . ( Except for the God thing ,which I just read on here .. ..ya learn a lotta new things on here .. ) As for the University and a prestige school up here with a fair proportion of Chinese ,its business as usual .Another comment I heard today ,was that if it was Chinese made ,it wasn't going to last long .. ..

I wonder if the Corona virus was introduced as a diversion from from whats happening in Hong Kong and lo and behold the chinese government has an explanation of all the bodies that may be piling up there from the "undesirables" that were causing all the unrest there. We haven't heard much about Hong Kong since the virus broke out. Just thinking out load.

30,000 cases world wide and it is doubling every 6 days.
30,000 to day 60,000 next week, 120,000 the following week, 240,000 the next. 480,000 after that.
The flu killed 400,000 + people last year. The Coronavirus has the potential to far exceed that figure.
How many packages, foodstuffs etc arriving in Australia from China will be covered in or will contain the coronavirus
