Small Gold with the GPX 5000
Went Detecting today on a patch that I flogged with a GPX4500 this year when I found 6 Nuggets, I had found gold there before with a extreme, I flogged this area a few times and didn't find anymore gold, so I thought I try it with the 5000, and bingo a .67 gram nugget, 7 feet from where I found one early this year. The 5000 is heaps better than the 4500.

10 million $ Question
Open question to anyone that has used the 5000, and 4500.
Is the 5000 the same jump in tech. as the 4500 was to the 4000?
At the moment i'm not convinced that it is.
Should I up grade because its far better or just mod. my 4500 with Woody?
Problem is that I still really enjoy using my 4500 and almost always find gold but I also know that you should up grade to not be left behind.

Re: Small Gold with the GPX 5000
Gday Tiboo Dave, I had a 4500 and upgraded to a 5000 and are happy that I did, the Gold I got yesterday was an area that I flogged with a 4500, and I dont know why the 4500 didn't pick up this Nug. I,m no expert but if your happy with your 4500 and still find gold why would you MOD it buy Woody :roll:I personally wouldn't, why stuff up a good detector? I dont know much about MODs. but if they are so good then why isn't Woody working for Minelab? I'm not knocking Woody or his mods, but I wouldn't mod a 4500, there is nothing wrong with a 4500. I think a GPX5000 is better.

PS: I was using fine gold settings

Can you mod a 4500 to make it work as good as a 5000?

Small gold with GPX 5000
Well done on your first find with your new GPX 5000 detector Johnny...Your old ( now mine) GPX 4500 works very nicely too as i found a 2 gram nugget first time out with it I had an enjoyable day out detecting with you on your patch at Heathcote on Saturday...but your new 5000 won the gold I had quite a few small targets, that i was happy to find but alas no gold..Your GPX 5000 certainly has a very quiet threshold and if that gives you an edge in finding more gold, then that`s a good outcome.
I am very pleased with the GPX 4500 and enjoy a new level in performance which will help me find more gold...just have to walk over it...and hear it also
PS...Your clip looks great also...well done.
Cheers Bill

I don't think the 5000 is such a big jump. The 4500 really did improve on quietness over the 4000. The 5000 balances better then the 4500 and runs a little quieter.
Not necessarilly aimed at you Tiboo Dave but for many others who have not been detecting that long i believe it doesnt matter whether you have a 4500 or 5000, 90% of the formula to finding gold is now not the machine (they are both that good), but the skill of the operater, the efficiency of the operator to cover ground, the research you do, the places you detect and the amount of time you detect.
I believe the simple answer is if you detect more then say 50 days a year and have been getting a few ounces at least each year you should upgrade if you can afford it. The edge of the 5000 on very small gold that is still on many vic reef lines and WA alone should give you the couple ounces extra needed to pay for an upgrade. If you have to think real hard about whether it is worth upgrading then consider spending more time researching and getting out to swing and hang onto the 4500 until you have the extra gold to buy a 5000 or the next model.

Re: Small Gold with the GPX 5000
Thanks for your replys.
Nugget Meister, from what i have seen the mod's do give you a 5000 only that your 4500 is worth far less once modded and minelab wont touch it once done so.
Tributer, you are 100% right in my experience the more time spent swinging, targets recovered, research and ground coverage are the key factors to success!

Re: Small Gold with the GPX 5000
Have owned a 3500, a 4000, a 4500 and now a 5000.
While I agree that on the surface the step from a 4500 to a 5000 may not be seem as dramatic
as the jump was from a 4000 to a 4500 - in fact the changes represent a number of important improvements
such as; the new soil timings, the reworking of some of the previous timings (Enhance in particular),
and the very noticeable improvement in Ground Balance and the machine being able to hold Ground Balance longer.
And really, it is wishful thinking to believe that mods are going to make a 4500 into a 5000.
So while at first glance the changes may be thought to be minor,
to a working prospector these 'subtle' changes are dramatic and welcomed.
They make a difference.

Dave Just a quick ?? have you seen a modded 4500 or just been told about it, due to the fact that the 5000 has only been out for a very short time I cannot believe that someone would pull it apart to identify the components considering they are covered in paint, I just don't believe that Woody or any other modder has had the time to study these new timing & then duplicate them then test them, I think its just hype to get work in the door.
cheers

Re: Small Gold with the GPX 5000
hi all
Picked up a 5000 on Monday
The weather in Vic has been a bit wild this week only got about 2 day's detecting in
ended up with 16 small bits biggest being .8 Gms
each time i found a bit i was asking would i have found it with my traded 4500
of the 16 found i feel the 45 would have got 12 or thereabout
being a little excited a with the new machine, trying different coils and settings
the unsettling weather i believe i will do better as i get to know the machine
Cheers Ruffles
