Bt 50/ford ranger oil change
Mates a diesel mechanic and told me to be dam careful if I was changing the oil in my ute ,apparently the 3.2 litre 5 cylinder has a variable oil pump ,if you let the oil drain for too long it can drain the oil pump and won't reprime,he said have the oil ready ,when oil stops running out put the plug back in and refill straight away, motors have been fried by the unwary apparently.

Mate, that sounds a bit odd, not questioning your mate.
But what if you had to remove the sump to do a repair? equals no oil no prime? it sounds to me like it could be a recall issue ? as I would expect the pump to be able to achieve a prime with the intake submerged in oil??? if I owned one I would be checking this out for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our is still under warranty (mazda doing services) but ive heard about this,if we keep it and i service it down the track i'll be sussing it out before i go near it,ive rebuilt the motor in my old cruza, gearbox ,2 transfer cases etc etc but the wifes bt50 i lift the bonnet and get nervous, there nice these modern 4x4's but not so simple
That 3.2,l is a sweet motor though!!!

Re bt
Mines still in warranty ,but I hadn't heard of it,I did a search (oil change bt50) and it went to a site where they were discussing it,so it's definitely worth asking .better safe than a very expensive sorry.only mentioned it as a lot will be coming out of warranty .and yes it goes like a cut cat gold chaser real happy with it especially towing the boat.

BT50 2012
Hi All, At 20,000kl I did my first oil change on my BT50 like I always did in the past, then a few weeks later I was reading something about the oil pump draining, that was very scary! Now I do it differently, I will have my new oil very handy on standby, change the oil filter first, then drain the oil, let it drain for 5 mins. then quickly put in the new oil. I change it every 10,000kl. And now after 62,000kl, still going strong. Cheers, Hermann.

BT50
What a silly bloody idea. I wonder whos brainchild that was.
Can anybody explain the advantages of a variable flow pump over a constant flow(?) pump, and how on earth does Fred Nerk prime this pump properly in his backyard when he changes his own oil?
