Cool lifting trick?
I've seen videos of people doing this but am not sure what they are listening for?
Apparently If you lift the coil quickly off the target the settling time of the detector can help tell you if its iron or not.
Can some one please explain this to me.
Thanks

Re: Cool lifting trick?
PI detectors as good as they now are, have a hard time dealing with the iron in the soil...its a metal detector....its job is to detect metal. The amount of variables in such stemming from the electronics to human error would give little to no result. One example would be gold/iron thats just above the time constant of the surrounding ground. Another would be the halo effect present in both ferrous targets and non ferrous. Ironstone particles that attach to both ironstone gold specimens and rusted iron. Now combine it with other time factors associated with human error.
Ground balance is another variable that could have a list as long as your arm.
Myth, but i could be wrong.

With the old SD's some were very good at telling other metals than gold by the audio.
If anyone believes this is possible now with the GPX's, he has his hand on it.

Now hang on just a minute there Inny!!If anyone believes this is possible now with the GPX's, he has his hand on it.
When working a patch in WA that has no rubbish, i could with 99.99% accuracy, tell the target was gold using my 4500.
From memory, the SD i believe was also a ....metal detector, not a gold detector. Guess work more than anything else.

That's the sort of patches one dreams about, when he has his hand on it Narra.Narrawa wrote:Now hang on just a minute there Inny!!If anyone believes this is possible now with the GPX's, he has his hand on it.

Nah, the digital audio took the soul out of the sound mate. I remember following an old bloke with a ratty 2100 around at Wedderburn
he rejected everything except 2 targets, one was a gram bit and the other was a 22 lead, I dug all the rest and they were all junk.
