Backup Speaker for ML 4500
Anybody carried out a comparison betwen the Rooster Booster and the ML low feed back Speaker?
Or are the the same unit.
Comments appreciated

Peter...
I would also be interested in such a comparison. I asked about a genuine Minelab speaker at Coiltek Maryborough and got an answer that makes me think there is no such thing .
A guy at Miners Den Bendigo convinced me that they had chosen the speaker for their Rooster Booster carefully after some trial & error and I have ASSUMED it is NOT a Minelab speaker.
It would be good to hear from others with more clues etc.
Cheers - Phil
PS - It looks like you can buy the speaker only (ie. no "booster") - that sounds interesting.

Re: Backup Speaker for ML 4500
Phil,
I notice the speaker in the link you posted isn't a rooster booster speaker as such.
Just to avoid confusion for others, the speaker used in the link may look or be identical to the Rooster Booster speaker but doesn't use the Rooster Booster connector.
Hope that makes sense, it's still early

You're right, I got carried away there, it has a 1/4inch jack. Also, the "blurb" does not actually say it's the same speaker, however, I'm guessing it's the same "guts" as it looks like the same enclosure etc. What do you/others think ?
"... Our brand new speaker to suit Minelab GPX-4500/GPX 5000 Metal Detectors. This speaker has been specifically engineered ( ) to eliminate the problem of feedback when checking your targets close to the coil. Speakers that are currently available in Australia all have this annoying feedback problem. This speaker has a standard 1/4" jack and is suited to most boosters currently available on the market. The speaker will also plug directly into your Minelab GPX series metal detector battery. ..."

Re: Backup Speaker for ML 4500
I check my targets very close to the coil....its how i found the b@stards to start with......i did check a target against my pick holder once, however the response was not up there compered to using the coil........like derrr!!!This speaker has been specifically engineered to eliminate the problem of feedback when checking your targets close to the coil.
As i live and breath ... your pulling my leg are you not??.Speakers that are currently available in Australia all have this annoying feedback problem.
Here's way round this problem..... buy one from another country.
I use a speaker that suffers no " feedback "....i got it from Jaycar when Adam was a boy. ..about $17 from memory. Im still using it, and you can still buy them from Jaycar today. Yet i dont carry a mic round with me, so its probably the reason i dont get any "feedback ".
Fairdinkum!!!
My partner uses this same speaker mentioned in the link above, with both a B&Z and without. Its just a run of the mill extension speaker. It comes with no special mojo, and if your close enough to the coil its going to let you know about it!!.
Feedback comes from having a mic to close to a speaker....if you want to get rid of the feedback problem....stop using a mic while detecting.
Oscillation is cause by your speaker being to close to the coil.....for the love of God, move it away.
God bless the gullible among us.
Re: Backup Speaker for ML 4500
Thats all good and well narrawa but its people like you with your "use your common sense" approach and your anti microphone views that have ruined the prospects for bush detectoroke (a variant of pub karaoke) to take hold in this hobby and some of us have invested considerable money in equipment and singing lessons!, I hope your happy!

Re: Backup Speaker for ML 4500
Wayne, i am very anti detectoroke, it chaffs my butt an scares the wildlife.
Fest your ears on this little go getter ....its called the Force Field ...or RPEFGFF for short. Its the only speaker of its kind and is engineered by a small group of Audiologist's "hear" in Australia to combat the problematic oscillation associated with the speaker coming into the coils field. It combines some of the latest technology known to man in the form of reverse polarity electromagnetic field generation force field.
For the layperson, that means it senses the field from the coil and changes polarity, effectively forcing the field from the pulse generated from the coil back away from the sound wave produced by this incredible little speaker. Hence, no oscillation. RRP $299
You can find out more information about it in the link below.
www.gulliblepeopleclickhere.RPEFGFF.gov.au
Honestly, i think if one is going to go to the trouble of advertising something, than put a little effort into it and make it somewhat spellbinding to the potential buyer. Just like i did in the one above
Your paying $29.95 for this "specifically engineered" speaker. (Alarm bells sounding) At that price its probably being made by Chinese bootleggers gathered round the still warming their hands during the assembly process. If thats not a good example of "specifically engineered" than im ...fresh out of ideas.

I have had the opportunity to test this device Jerrycanjoe and can vouch for its performance and lack of feedback, takes 2 AA sized batteries,....grudgingly!, 3 will destroy it!.careful selective feeding can reduce the effect but I have to say the accumulation of Guano on ones shoulder is somewhat disturbing.

Narrawa -
I also found that sentence unclear and decided they really meant: "... to eliminate the problem of feedback when checking your targets when YOU are close to the coil. ..."
It might just be a clarity/detail/proof-reading problem between management and the website maintenance people etc. In addition, "... specifically engineered ..." was explained to me as trying a bunch of likely candidate speakers and finding the one that interfered least.

Re: Backup Speaker for ML 4500
Phil, your probably right mate.
I think we're not meant to question such things.... just take it on the chin like good little prospectors and wear it. After all, do we not pay silly amounts of money for skid plates made from tissue paper.? Why not speakers that exhibit feedback elimination technology in an environment where feedback is none existent.?
Lets have the model number or that speaker .....or some specs.?

Re: Backup Speaker for ML 4500
Today I picked up a R-B "low feedback" speaker (1/4inch stereo phono plug as per Minelab amp' etc). The Techo' inside me had the back off as soon as I got within reach of a screwdriver. Thoroughly unremarkable to the naked eye, with no markings other than voice-coil polarity. I'm confident they have made an effort to choose a low feedback specimen for their product. However, I hope they have not compromised on reproduction quality etc. The only real way to find out would be to test and compare with some known "goodies" at various frequencies etc. Anyway, I'll see how it goes in use.
