Re: Laptop, cached Google Earth. USB mouse recommendations ?
I use a GlobalSat GPS mouse (current model is BU353). The only GPS mouse I've tried so I can not compare to others.
I've had it for about 3 years and have had no issues. Fast to acquire satellites. I am quite happy with it. Secures to the dash near the windscreen easily so the corrugations don't bump it off.
It was simple to set up (although I use OziExplorer for Moving Map rather than cached Google).

I've spent hours on google earth, gpsbabel, garmin and gps forums researching my etrex 20. It is ok in google earth with waypoints etc but will not give current position with realtime tracking, something to do with GarminPVT not being as good as NMEA.

That may be so, I use a rhino650 with protocol NMEA in Google Earth works well, in OziExplorer PVT works OK.
A common fault beginners make when setting-up the GPS is that they are inside and don't have access to satillites and do not get a location on the map.

You are certainly right Geof, it's difficult to get a GPS fix from indoors, the point I am making is below.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPSBabel
GPSBabel is a cross-platform, free software to transfer routes, tracks, and waypoint data to and from consumer GPS units, and to convert between over a hundred types of GPS data formats
http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-development/fmt_kml.html
Google Earth also uses GPSBabel internally for receiver communications and several file format imports and exports.
http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-development/fmt_garmin.html
Garmin serial/USB protocol (garmin)
The following Garmin GPS receivers are supported, but they do not support Garmin communication protocol and don't work with the garmin option.
