Hi
Can you David
(Detrackozi) or any one with the knowledge please explain to me how to convert a reference like these into Deg,min, seconds to use in Google.
Golden Gully,55H,295412,5910384,

Golden Gully Reef,55H,295312,5910184

At the moment I am opening up Natmap (mapping ) and entering the above in the Select by grid coordinates (MGA(94) which offers an Easting/Northing and a Zone.
Then I load that map and using the information in the bottom left of screen, which shows Grid/MGA/Metres, select the "Grid"button which changes to Lat/long and also GDA94 and Deg ' ". This is then the figures that I can put into Google to see where David has been describing.

Sorry if this is a bit long winded but I'm trying to learn from David how to map read. I'm the wrong side of 60 and trying to get my head around stuff I should have done years ago

Finally (for this session) what maps are you using David, they have more detail on than my Natmaps, are you using the Accuglobe program?

thanks for reading this far

You might find this site useful - UTM/LatLong convertor

http://www.rcn.montana.edu/resources/tools/coordinates.aspx

Here is some more info about conversions and the differences between UTM and traditional lat/long.

As I understand it lat and long can be gived in different ways and although i can get by with ozi explorer and google, I cant advise you, but to say play around with the program until you get the hang of things, and im sure you will get a proper explination from this forum.CP

Hey Mate, By my reckoning translating UTM to Lat/long would be Latitude: 53° 19' 55.622" S and Longitude: 143° 55' 46.694" E I always use UTM as they are easier to
plot manually on a paper map, a lot of people me Lat/Long but can be confusing or not work well if they are not entered exactly, I dont use paper maps much these days as I have NSW and VIC covered By 1:50 and 1:100 topo maps that I can use with Ozi and my Eee PC lappy, not sure what you are trying to acheive, do you want to look at the area in google to see what sort of layout of the bush and general terrain, If you are looking to find what area it is then look it up here http://dpistore.efirst.com.au/categories.asp?cID=4&c=253237 and download your Goegraphical map in PDF you can convert and calibrate, let me know as I have converted maps for Vic goldfields

Hi,
thanks for the guidence, I am having a "grey moment "following these b**** numbers. So I have done a "google "search which gave me:

http://www.cellspark.com/UTM.html
which I can relate too.

rab I'm sorry but I do not follow how you got your reading
Latitude: 53° 19' 55.622" S and Longitude: 143° 55' 46.694" E

The second series of 55H,295312,5910184
using the cellspark program gives me
lat 36deg 55' 55" lon 144 deg 42' 06"
which is near Heathcote in Victoria

(sorry for the bold typing, I can not resume the smaller type

As for my intentions, I am learning how to use Ozi-Explorer (brilliant program)

and hope to make up a stand for my laptop in our Patrol.
I hope in time --read money available--to get a small EeePc as you have.
I have been following Davids-Detrackozi" instructions and have checked out that link in DPI store.
WOW that,s a heck of a lot of maps. Which are the one's I would need? for Victoria. Are they the same detailed one's that David uses?
At the moment I use the Natmap 2004 Raster version. and of course Google Earth.
We hit WA next year How to understand map references. Icon_biggrin
Appreciate any advice.
As we are travelling South towards Melbourne, I may not have internet access, but I will be checking in ASAP.

Thanks heaps
John

In google earth goto

:-Tools-----Options-------Show Lat/Long
Select what you want to use.
Enter your values in Fly to.

Remember Google uses WGS84 very similar to GDA94

Then you can change back Via :-Tools-----Options-------Show Lat/Long

The same can be in Ozi Explorer eg File----Configeration----Map------Lat/Long Display

You can also change the Map Datum in Ozi Explorer

If you have a Garmin Etrex or simular then I find the easiest way is to enter the coords into it and then change the datum over and then you have what you want.

Hi guys
sorry for my silence, but I had no internet reception. (In the back blocks of QLD) Thanks for the advice, which I have followed and I'm getting the hang of it now.

Sorry for the confusion David.

Paul,
I actually have a MIO C220 which is very good to use for the conversion as you describe.
thanks
John

Hi John, just reading this post and have an answer...

http://www.earthpoint.us/Convert.aspx

enter 55H,295312,5910184 in te position box then click view in Google earth and it will make a xlm file open with Google earth and it will take you there. You can then save it and name it whatever you want.

Hope this helps.
