It'll be interesting to see the results, the Son in Law has same vehicle and is preparing to head to the cape from Brisbane. His fuel economy is lousy..... but its a heavy truck with big motor which accounts for a lot.

Re: Constant 4 wheel or lock able Hubs
Your son should not only notice an improvement in fuel economy but his front diff won't wear out so quickly because it won't be turning all the time.

4x4 explained ???? I hope
I did own a defender stuck to the road real good brakes good you could drive along at 80 kms hour and turn up the gutter it would soke up the bumps great.
Allot of people don’t understand when they are told constant four wheel drive all the late models have a differential in the gear box what happens it will spread the load
Evenly over all four wheels until you really get stuck.
When one wheel comes of the ground the gear box will direct the power to the wheel with the least amount of pressure just like a normal diff when you do a burn out around a corner.
That is when you pull the gear stick on that locks the central gear box.
I don’t think my land rover defender would use any less fuel if it was driven only by the back wheels???
I hope I explained it right a engineer told me something like that

Re: Constant 4 wheel or lock able Hubs
G'day Manny make sure you lock the hubs before you enter the mud holes. Other wise you goto get out and lock them while in the mud. . I have been there a few times but I sent the misses out into the mud. You should see the look on her face not pretty . This is a true story.
Our new 4x4 has the auto locking hubs so she doesn't give me that dirty look any more.
Cheers.
Mike.

I upgraded my stock manual hubs to a shiny new set, best thing ever saves ur whole front drive train from turning at all saving CV's and all sorts from extra and unnecessary pressures. With those mags on ur landcruiser they look ugly as all hell but well worth it.
Just remember if your not locking the hubs much off road just lock them in and g/box to 4x4 every few weeks and drive a few circles just to circulate everything.
