.I did own a defender stuck to the road real good brakes good you could drive along at 80 kms hour and turn up the gutter it would soke up the bumps great.
Allot of people don’t understand when they are told constant four wheel drive all the late models have a differential in the gear box what happens it will spread the load
Evenly over all four wheels until you really get stuck.
When one wheel comes of the ground the gear box will direct the power to the wheel with the least amount of pressure just like a normal diff when you do a burn out around a corner.
That is when you pull the gear stick on that locks the central gear box.
I don’t think my land rover defender would use any less fuel if it was driven only by the back wheels???
I hope I explained it right a engineer told me something like that

A Landrover Defender will give 10 to 9.5L/100km (or perhaps better) which is very good for a vehicle of that size and weight. The Defenders which are constant 4WD have been renown for their good fuel economy.
