G'day Sandpit,
Miners moss, is what some guys use, looks like scrunched up spaghetti.
The big decider on what you choose is the amount of black sand in the material your processing?
Last thing you want is the matting chockers with black sand and your gold sailing over the top!

Good luck.

if you made the bottom half the same as this you would not need carpet , i run this set up on the bottom half of my banjo and it catches even fine gold

Artificial turf is used here in QLD succesfully. Recommendation is to use the shorter length blades as the longer ones tend to lay over and not catch the gold effectively.

thanxs bicter
I was starting to think that way
And go slow to start with and see what happens
until i get some consistant results
Time to start some long country drives
Picnics at a riverside
and collect some rocks for crushing and redclaws for BBQ

Cheers
