So! We Think We Are Special In The Universe??
Check this out from start to finish.

The chances of us figuring out what we are in the universe and what exactly the universe is are about a good as an typhoid bacteria figuring out that it is part of a galaxy.

Re: So! We Think We Are Special In The Universe??
Neither will I try to figure it out Adrian, for we are what we are & the universe is what it is, constantly changing, constantly evolving. We (as human beings) are part of the universe, as much as the universe is a part of us.
Cheers Kon.

Re: So! We Think We Are Special In The Universe??
It is amazing to think about it for a while when you realise that we and every atom of our solar system and the earth and gold nuggets and our detectors are part of a galaxy and are bound to it by gravitational force. We and every atom of this earth are connected to each other and the galaxy centre. Remember that the galaxy is 100,000 light years in diameter. One light year is approx 300,000 times 31,536.6000 Sec per year) = 9.5,000,000,000,000 km. Our galaxy is 100,000 times that in diameter and the galaxy is a speck of dust in the universe with each speck of dust being separated by almost unimaginable distances
So what is the point of space exploration??
We could spend an eternity and never get out of our own galaxy. Even at the speed of light it would take us 50,000 years going the short way to leave this galaxy . It would take 4.5 years to reach the closest star to us in our galaxy after the sun and then an unknown amount of time to find any planets that might be in orbit around that star and the chance of any of them being habitable are near on nil.
There are a few stars within 4.5 to 16 light years of earth and they are all huge and not really somewhere I would want to go for a bbq.
If ya want to feel small check this out.
Am not sure how we would keep ourselves alive while exploring those stars. Maybe we will need a Star Trek type vehicle.

We should be focused on careing for and keeping this planet our home

I never get tired of watching this little video..Always makes me realise our little place in the universe will always be insignificant, when you look at the vastness of what is out there
I think it's a shame we'll never reach it

Maybe not in this lifetime Sharkbait, but who knows, someday we just might. It is quite obvious the use of fossil fuels/hypersonics for space travel aint the answer.
The day man finds a way to harness electromagnetic force & use it towards propulsion, then I believe, we'll be one step closer to warp speed.
Cheers Kon.

Space certainly is vast beyond our comprehension. Sometimes when im standing in the sand on a beach i ponder the comment that there are many times more stars than grains of sand on all the beaches, let alone the one i am standing in. It is hard to comprehend the vastness of the universe. For me the stars are something that adds beauty to the nature of existence.
I definitely agree that we need to look after our home planet and try not to sweat the small things that can often cause stress and decrease our appreciation of this wonderful existence. Caring for the planet would make a great thread Adrian...
In terms of gold in the universe, if we take the time scale and amount of matter, apparently the element is so rare that it would be like throwing up some gold dust in ones hand. That's how much of the rare element exists in the known universe. It was created under circumstance that do not occur very often. Natural gold nuggets really are amazingly rare anywhere. I know i will be endeavoring not simply sell then to the refiners, i think even the smallest "nugget" deserves better and if I must sell them i will try to get them into the hands of private collectors. Gold in a matrix of quartz and or iron stone i will try not to break up.
cheers

I wonder if it is possible to go faster than light speed?
Everything emits electromagnetic energy at the speed of light. If our rocket tries to go faster than it can emit energy, would there be a build up of this energy within the rocket build material and the fuel that would create a huge temperature increase within every atom and therefore cause the atoms to disintegrate or transform into something else.
There is something else permeating space that we have yet to identify that allows the transmission of electromagnetic energy from one place to another at an almost constant velocity no matter how weak or powerful that energy may be.

While it was good to look at, I picked up some animation as well in the panning back shots, so that spoiled the impact/originality of being Hubble photography.

Re: So! We Think We Are Special In The Universe??
Yes it did spoil it a bit but some of the objects in those genuine pics are truly mind bending in size.....Or maybe it is just that we are so small.
But then again: if you could shrink yourself down to a size that would make you in size to an atom as you are to the earth and you were on a diamond atom then the next atom of that diamond matrix would be so far away as to be not visible..... So! there is a universe without and within??....And there is more empty space in an atom than there is atom. Which is likely how a huge star can collapse under gravity into a very small dense central core. a few kays across..... So maybe the earth and us are just particles within the structure of a single living enormous something or other.

I heard a podcast about a new instrument they have put into space which allows greater resolution than the hubble. It will be great to see what our scientists can make of the data into the future.

The Future of Space Travel
Hi
Mans quest for immortality will solve the problem of time in space travel. It will start of with arms and leg replacement with robotics, then move to organs and finally the brain with the help of AI the human race will morph into technology. Cell structure will become obsolete. Once this has been achieved time and distance become irrelevant. Turn the new human off , sit it in the AI developed form off space transport and set the lightyear timer to turn it on near destination.
But it probably wont happen that way as Artificial Intelligence will have the answers to questions that havent yet been asked.
Cheers Dig

Re: So! We Think We Are Special In The Universe??
How can artificial intelligence be smarter than us if we will be the constructors and programmers of that intelligence??
Robotics need a power supply and we will be the providers of that. Even atomic energy goes flat in time. Space is a big place and we will be extinct a million years before the sun turns into a red giant that will engulf the entire solar system. Nearby giant stars like betelgeux and antares will have gone super nova and engulfed the earth and likely Mars and Jupiter. Space exploration is a total and ridiculous waste of our time and resources and is indicative of our false belief that we are the ultimate life form in the universe when we in fact have zero idea of what the universe is.

It already exists and its due to computing speed. The human brain doesn't have the capability to analyze 100 years weather data and produce a forecast. From my memory Google in the early days would only analyze the first few words for a search.Humans are born dumb, ,intellegence is not inhereted.
The problems of tomorrow will be solved by technology that surpasses our brains computing capacity.

Re: So! We Think We Are Special In The Universe??
If by Dumb you mean without knowledge then that is true but we do have some instinctive memory patterns that we a borne programmed with.
We have an ability to learn and some of us have a great ability to solve problems even when we have little knowledge.
Wild animals have had millions of years to learn and adapt to their surroundings to the extent that much of what/information they need to be able to survive has become part of their DNA and is passed on from generation to generation. Wild animals also have the ability to learn and to teach their offspring and most of them can communicate in ways that we have yet to figure out.
The human brain is capable of incredible computing speed and imaging capability and we used to be able to use it but as we devised easier methods of survival and as we have all but wiped out all daily threats to our immediate survival from wild animals and have devised ways of living in all climatic conditions, our brains have lost the ability to think quick, so to speak, it like an unused muscle has become weak. There are a few who have retained these abilities and they will be the people who rule over us in the future just as those same type of people ruled over primitive man by introducing the belief in a God and religion. These beliefs still control the weak minded today, but if it makes them happy then fine it is a achieving what was intended for it to achieve.
I have known people with photographic memories and people with instant recall ability. I know of one person who can do instant mathematical calculations mentally. I gave him a five figure multiplication and his answer was immediate and correct. He was just as fast with addition and division. It was as though no thought was required.
We have lost much of our mental abilities and strengths as a direct result of making our life easier.
The simpler our life is made the more stupefied the common man will become. The more apathetic and the more accepting of Big Brother type control we will be.

Re: So! We Think We Are Special In The Universe??
Simply put, I "developed" a "photographic memory" during the heady days of secondary and post secondary studies and it was very helpful come exam times. But it was not a natural ability and it took a fair amount of work. As I am now an old bloke I have been taking "advantage" of the special memory skills made available via computing to supplement my failing natural abilities.
I guess my point is that we don't know what we are capable of until we try, but it doesn't always have to be innate natural abilities and if developed they have to be maintained, else they will be lost.

Yes if you don't use it you lose it.
By photographic memory I mean being able to create an exact image in your mind of anything you have seen. Just like in a full colour dream image but you do-not have to be asleep. It is done in full awareness and deliberately.
I have done memory isometric training that will enable anybody to gain a powerful memory for facts, faces, numbers. lists etc. You just have to persevere with the training. I wish schools would give this training as a mandatory course for primary school children. That would have to be better than introducing them to drugs and sex education at grades 1, all that achieves is creating a base for deviate predators to work from.
