I agree S.A is a bit backwards, but there is still a littlebit you can do and see if you are interested in mining and driving whilst you are on holiday here.
Here is a excellent way to spend a day or two.
Coming to Adelaide via the South Eastern Freeway as you pass the Callington exit. passing over the next hill look over to your right you will glimpse the Kanmantoo open cut mine. As you continue and decend into a gully on the left are the remains of the Aclare mine. Coming up on the next overpass to the left is mt barker summit and quarry on the hill. Exit at Mt Barker and follow your nose thru to Hahndorf. Now head off to Echunga and visit Jupiter Creek (fossicking area)then on to Chappel Hill (fossicking area). Once done there make your way to Gumeracha and Birdwood. Then to Mt Crawford forrest HQ and yep fossicking area.
Then on to Williamstown and then the whispering wall. If its a Tuesday drop past the Barossa Goldfields and the historical society. and go for a walk thru Victoria Hill,
Now head down towards Humbug scrub and there are more walking areas with mining history. Back in the car and on to Kersbrook and then make your way into Adelaide via Gorge Rd.
And as you leave Adelaide via Glen Osmond passing the Tollgate glance to your left behind the carpark.
For maps and a good reading history of mining and politics in S.A. I highly reccomend the following books be read first:
-Goldfields of S.A. by G J Drew
-Silver and a trace of gold : a history of the Aclare mine by J.K. Chilman
