Yes the largest nuggetts in the world have been found in victorias golden triangle, like the welcome stanger and hand of faith nuggett, l bet the worlds largest nuggett worth tens of millions is sitting out there now in detector depth just waiting for someone to find it, it will probably be found somewhere dectorists have'nt bothered looking before, like the side of a road or remote part of a state forest where gold has'nt been found before.

Hmmmm is this a conspiracy theory or what?
With the imminent arrival of the minelab 6000 on the horizon, the brilliant minds at minelab release this nugget to clear out the old 5000 stock.

Re: 177 oz nugget Ballarat area
Shiraz,
A Minelab conspiracy! Really?
Cordell Kent buys and sells gold , he is not a metal detector dealer so the "imminent " release of a Minelab 6000 would have no direct benefit to him .
Having said that, all this publicity will do no harm to his business.

”A cynic is an idealist whose rose-colored glasses have been removed, snapped in two and stomped into the ground, immediately improving his vision.” You, you, you, young whipper snapper.
Spinna, what I'm saying is that minelab released the nugget. Where's that tin foil?

Re: 177 oz nugget Ballarat area
My theory on this nugget is...... It was found a long time ago, now the owner wants to sell it and attract a hi premium so....lets tell the world and find a good buyer.....
A nugget found yesterday sounds a lot better that found four years ago!!
No one in there right mind would find a nugget that big and go straight to that gold shop and sell it straight away or say where they really found it.....
I just saw the news story, make up your own minds

Re: 177 oz nugget Ballarat area
I'm with most of you, if I found something of that size it would go straight in the bank and I would spend the following months thrashing that area until I was sure it was clean. Also, given he pulled it from 2ft yesterday, I'm sure the last thing on his mind would be to refill the hole. It was a clear day here yesterday, I wonder if there are any high res satellite photos around
Re: 177 oz nugget Ballarat area
If anyone found something even close to that size, you'd be pinching your self for a month or more to make sure it wasn't a dream

Re: 177 oz nugget Ballarat area
I have just been onto NASA and they will send me pics from the last week over G T area down to the restricted space allowed but they want 50 % of further finds in the holes not filled. They are not allowed to reveal the id of the people in their photos so have given them all false ids.Further more they want FIRST use of the new 6000 on any of the targets shown. But the over riding factor will be the GST and CARBON TAX levies that need to be paid .As most of you will show up in these pics i will not post them on here as they could incriminate you as the ones not filling the holes, so good luck with your further diggings and finds.Congratulations must go to the finder of this nugget, a well kept secret till now.

Lucky prospector finds huge gold nugget

A gold nugget with an estimated value of more than $300,000 has been unearthed near Ballarat in Victoria's west.
An amateur prospector found the nugget weighing 177 ounces, or 5.5 kilograms, with a metal detector just outside Ballarat in a popular area for prospecting.
The owner of The Mining Exchange Gold Shop in Ballarat, Cordell Kent, said the find was one of the most significant in his 20 years in the business.
"Over that period the sum total of my finds would be just over 100 ounces (2.8 kilograms)," he said.
"We have 800 prospectors on our books and only a couple of those have ever found a nugget over 100 ounces.
"So there's only been one or two big pieces and they were found a long time ago."
Mr Kent is seeking a buyer for the nugget on behalf of the lucky prospector, who wishes to remain anonymous.
Both expect the nugget to fetch more than $300,000.
Mr Kent said prospecting was becoming increasingly popular with gold valued at $1,600 per ounce.
"A lot of people think Victoria's goldfields are dead and that there's none left, but he (the prospector) has worked in an area where a lot of people have worked in the past but he persisted and he's been rewarded.
"We are 162 years into the gold rush and it's never totally waned, it's just changed."
The prospector is relatively new to the hobby and was totally overwhelmed when he brought it into the shop, Mr Kent said.
He found the nugget about 10.30am (AEDT) on Wednesday.
Mr Kent would not reveal exactly where the nugget was found.

A Loner
my theory is that nuggets like 'the hand of faith', 'welcome stranger' and this 177oz are loners, they are so heavy they have slowed and have not kept up with the travelling smaller gold back in erosion or glacial times when the lands were shaping/forming/weathering. How these large nuggets are formed is another story.
Was the nugget really found yesterday, some things don't quite add up-
when the lucky finder first went to the gold shop he claims he found it 3 hours ago, well if the excitement settled down quickly then you had to clean it trying to remove horrible clay and looking at the small cavities in the specimen what looks like scratch marks as if to remove bits of quartz or iron stone and why would the model of the detector be mentioned, a VLF would of got that one.
