Crown Land vs Private Land
Long time lurker, first time posting here.
I'm a software engineer by profession, and have five years experience working with maps and GISs (Geographical Information System).
In my collection of mapping data I have cadastral polygon boundaries from every local government (council) in Australia. Because this data is sourced directly from most councils, it is extremely accurate (to sub-meter).
If there were enough interest I could build a simple application to determine whether any given point is on crown land, or private land. With today's GPS devices it would be accurate within a few meters. The data also has boundary lines along most creeks.
This could prevent potential disputes between prospectors and land owners.
If I could source data for mine leases I could easily extend the service to include those.
Let me know if you'd be interested in this type of service.

Re: Crown Land vs Private Land
Having a readily accessable database of land boundaries would be a boon. Particularly if it could be linked into google earth app or oziexplorer.

Hey Willrocks that sounds like a great idea, I say go ahead my man! knock yourself out! Technology is not one of my strong point but I am trying and will get there eventually, I for one would be very interested in any kind of maps that may help in the quest!

Re: Crown Land vs Private Land
Do most of you have phone/internet access where you prospect?
As a start I'm thinking a simple on-line service that shows whether your current position is on crown land or private land. Perhaps with the ability to upload GPS way points for areas where there's no phone/internet coverage.

G'day
That would be a very usefull tool to have. The only problem would be phone/internet connection. The majority of the time I have no service in the areas I go
Cheers

Re: Crown Land vs Private Land
It would definitely be easier, are you thinking a one off price for the app?
or a free app and a site search fee?

Re: Crown Land vs Private Land
Sounds like a good idea but agree with Chimpy that most places still have no phone/ Internet connection. Having said that I have HEMA app with 4WD Maps on which I can place a marker at GPS points but the maps are not very detailed. No Internet required for the HEMA app (Cost $149).

Re: Crown Land vs Private Land
I use memory maps which also uses GPS and is a moving map.
Very accurate for tracks and lets you save your travels to PC, add notes etc then sync back to a 7" tablet I use.
And her indoors can't get lost as we both have it on our phones, just drop a flag before you leave the car / camp.

Re: Crown Land vs Private Land
For those in NSW you can get that info from here - http://nswtitles.minerals.nsw.gov.au/nswtitles/ when it loads tick the box for 'Administrative Boundaries' and the + to expand then tick the box for Lot and Crown Land. It then shows all the Lot and DP numbers and boundaries. It also shows the Crown Lands as yellow shaded areas.

This is a great resource, it shows everything you need to know. One question..........how do you find out who has the current tenement? Seems my whole area is under one EL?

Re: Crown Land vs Private Land
Been thinking about this also. It would be good at the very least to be able to store GeoVic data offline on my iPhone and have my GPS position plotted on the map. Perhaps the ability to annotate with notes and photographs as well.

You can download the layers/info from GeoVic and run them on an app called iGIS. Or you can pay $10 and get the whole lot sent to you in a DVD, that's what I did. I have all the geology, historic mines, deep and shallow leads etc on mine. If you need to know where property boundaries are just go across to the MemoryMap app, the 25k maps have all these and some of the old diggings, as in the pic Redfin posted. Both these work offline, with your gps position and track recording.
Heres a link to it
