Picks - What Size? Empty Picks - What Size?

Post  MTB Digger Mon May 21, 2012 8:26 pm

Hi all,
Been using a CC Picks Faith model 600mm shaft 500g wt. Just taken delivery of a CC Picks Discoverer 900mm shaft 1350g and cannot believe how much easier the digging is. I estimate that I am using about 15% of the energy to dig the same size hole, & tree roots are no problem. Certainly notice the difference after a long day.

Cheers Simon

Hi Simon. I have been making my own picks as the one that came with my 4500 wasn't heavy enough for digging deep holes in hard ground. I make the pick heads from old Hilux 4wd springs. The pick , my favourite (in the photo's) weighs 2.5kg and is 800mm long . Its a bit heavier to carry but much less effort is required to use in hard deep ground. If the ground is really hard dig the pointy end into the dirt and you can pull out big clods of clay and or rocks. It doesn't take long to dig a big hole. I gave one to a fellow forum member to try instead of his big CC pick and he loves it. He says its much easier to dig big holes with a lot less effort. Cheers Grumpy (Doug).

That is a nice looking pick indeed,
I would like one like that, even the rounded looking wings on the scraping side are angled well for digging deep holes Smile

Nice job indeed grumpy 57 well done
