custom made picks
Hi there uncle bob , the sizes vary , as each pick head is individually hand cut , no 2 picks are exactly the same size , but on average the length from scraping end to pointed end is 320 m.m. , 315 m.m. , 310 m.m. , 305 m.m. , 300 m.m. , the width of scraping end can vary from 100 m.m. , 110 m.m. , 115 m.m. , 120 m.m. , 130 m.m. , 140 m.m. , 150 m.m. , 160 m.m. up to 200 m.m. wide , handles are a mixture of American hickory , American white ash , English oak , and aussie spotted gum, each handle is hand fitted and riveted with either a 6 m.m. or 9 m.m. pin , the handles lengths are from 300 m.m. 400 m.m. , 500 m.m., 600 m.m. , 700 m.m. , 750 m.m. up to 900 m.m. I have taken a few of my prototype picks into the goldfields close to my place and dug with them all day , I have purposely tried to break the handle spigot from the blade where it is welded ,I put the spiked end under a tree root and 2 of us levered on the handle for 3 minutes , backwards and forwards , it did not fail, it just sprung to and frow ,I hope this answers your question , regards , Andy .UNCLE BOB wrote:Gday Junkyarddog

custom made picks
Hi Mike , thanks for your interest , sizes vary , each pick is individual , length from scraping end to pointed end is from 300 m.m. , to 320 m.m. , scraping end varies in width from 100 m.m. , to 200 m.m. , handle lengths vary from 300 m.m. , to 900 m.m. and every thing in between , handles are a mixture of American hickory , American white ash , English oak , and aussie spotted gum , handles are hand fitted with either a 6 m.m. or 9 m.m. rivet , which is hand peened . One of my pre sale testuntil ths was trying to break the handle spigot from the pick head , at the welded connection , we put the blade end into a 8 inch dawn vice , and proceeded to bash on the handle spigot with a 10 l.b sledge hammer, we belted it up and down , left and right ,until the spigot was completely deformed , the welded connection did not fail , I am offering a lifetime replacement warranty on the welded connection between the spigot and the pick head , I am pricing all of my picks at $100 each , across the board , I have sold over 70 picks with no returns , I hope this answers your questions , regards , Andy .Mike54 wrote:G'day junkyarddog,

Re: Junkyarddogs custom made prospecting picks.
Hi Junkyarddog
When a pick is turned to the side, I use it to scrape away dug up dirt to one side.
Now is there any chance to have the pick head made slightly straight to do this?

Re: Junkyarddogs custom made prospecting picks.
Hi Uncle Bob,
I bought one of these picks some time ago and am very happy with it. I used to use a Walco and did what you are saying, turn it on it's side to sweep a bit of dirt in one hit, but that's because the Walco has a skinnier front end and I have found with this pick, being a lot wider across the front scraping end, that it scoops plenty of soil so I do not miss the side straight edge of the Walco. Don't get me wrong, the Walco is a damn good pick, and a picks' job is only to dig, but this one that I bought off Junkyarddog just feels a little bit better in my hand and is more of a pleasure to use.

I know what you're saying but I still like the idea of having to scape dirt to the side when digging deeper holes and the spade of the pick is not enough, just want it to be my ultimate pick....!

Re: Junkyarddogs custom made prospecting picks.
Hi Junkyarddog
I've got the measurements for you for my ultimate pick.
Pick head - 150mm wide and 430mm long with a straight side. The handle to be 900mm long and of spotted gum.
How does all that stack up for you?
I've tried a few picks but this size works really well for me as I am a tall guy

G-day uncle bob , width of scraping end is no problem , it can be from 100 m.m. to 250 m.m. , but pick length from scraping end to pointed end is at its maximum at 335 m.m. And 900 m.m. handle length is no problem ,regards , Junkyarddog .UNCLE BOB wrote:Hi Junkyarddog

junkyarddog prosecting pick ?
Hello junkyarddog, does your picks have magnets in the handles. Cannot see them in the photos. Also do you post them out and the cost of postage. There is two models , do they have names or model numbers.

Re: Junkyarddogs custom made prospecting picks.
Hello all. I am new to the site so excuse my lack of knowledge. I am wondering if the junkyarddog picks are still available. Can anyone please let me know if they're being made still. Really need to get myself a good pick. Thank you all.
