Access to Ophir
I've seen some videos of Ophir and it looks real purty, so I wouldn't mind going there but I'm not sure whether the access is four wheel drive only. I have a Honda CRV which regrettably is only AWD (and that's only on demand).

Re: Access to Ophir
Hi Rp,
access to the main areas of Ophir is fine in a 2wd vehicle from either end. Some of the tracks leading to the more out of the way detecting areas are 4wd but should be okay in your Awd with caution. The even better areas have no tracks at all and are best on a quad, bike or by foot.
Cheers

Thanks Madtuna, are there any hazards to watch out for like flash flooding or agro locals?

Re: Access to Ophir
No agro locals that I know of or have had problems with in over 30 years of going there. Some of the local youths from Orange can be a bit noisey during Christmas or New years but generally it's just inhabited by families and couples.
Flash flooding can be a problem. If it's raining in Orange or anywhere upstream DO NOT camp over the other side of SummerHill Creek. Watched a nice ex-ambo F100 float down over the ford one day.

Re: Access to Ophir
Old thread but thought I would reply as this is my local haunt. Main road through the diggings is 2WD but can get tricky in the wet. Anything off the main track is 4WD, you need the ground clearance more than anything. I have a 2WD high lift Holden Rodeo ute which can go most places but anything steep I cant get traction in it. My other vehicle 4WD GU Nissan Patrol goes every where no problems what so ever.

Re: Access to Ophir
Ophir is a public recreation reserve managed by a local trust. Prospecting/fossicking is allowed without any permit. There is a small camping fee if staying overnight.

Re: Access to Ophir
Is there any reports of gold still being found by detectors at Ophir?
Tried years ago, but been thinking of a 2nd attempt.
